The Martinez Gang, now more united than ever, prepared to confront the shadows that lurked in the corners of their existence. The Contractor, a master strategist with a penchant for chaos, had unleashed a storm. It was different from the type of attacks he would usually have done. The gang knew that the Contractor needed to be taken out or everyone was in danger of being killed by the Contractor. Unfortunately for some of the Table Members, most are not good in combat and have never been on the field. It was their money and men that made them influential.
My senses were heightened as I remained vigilant. The stakes were higher than a mere assassination attempt on Marvin. The Contractor, ever planning, ever attacking, won’t stop. It sure looked like we were clueless, though the Gang had place it on me to make a plan to take out the Contractor. I did not want to give them the impression that I cannot provide protection or not equal to the task they assigned me to.
The atmosphere in the Martinez Gang's hideout was charged with tension. I had just informed the Gang about the attack on Marvin. Every member was concerned and wanted me to say that they were safe.
I sat down and Larry sat with me as Lucas, the son of Uncle Jonah, rushed into the meeting. Sancho was the first to harass Lucas who seemed petrified.
“You are not supposed to be here. Who let you in? How did you beat the security?” Sancho barked.
“I am Lucas, Marvin’s nephew, and he is your patron,” said Lucas.
“We know who you are, Lucas. The supreme leader asked you a question. I would not let him repeat himself if I were you,” I said.
"Cassie, you know this fool who barged into the table meeting?" Sancho asked, turning towards me and looking very surprised that Lucas had out-smarted whatever security he had in place.
“The Contractor just tried to kill me, he is after my life,” Lucas said. Looking very uncomfortable and afraid.
Lucas finally confessed to the sinister plots that had woven a web of danger around Marvin. The revelation sent shockwaves through the room, and all eyes turned to me as I absorbed the gravity of Lucas's admission.
"I... I tried to kill Marvin," Lucas stammered, his eyes avoiding direct contact. "Several times. But the Contractor, he's after me now. He thinks I betrayed him."
“Why should we help you with all that you have done? You have tried to kill the Deputy Leader and a Patron, your very nephew. Don't you think your request is odd?” I asked.
My gaze hardened as I assessed Lucas's demeanor. The web of deceit and treachery seemed to entangle everyone in the room. The Contractor would do anything to get what they had planned, and he held a vendetta against Lucas, who now sought refuge within the confines of the Martinez Gang.
Larry, always analytical, broke the silence. "Why did you try to kill Marvin, Lucas? And who is this Contractor you're talking about?"
Lucas, his vulnerability laid bare, sighed deeply before explaining his twisted motivations. "We were to get the documents and share the company if we succeeded. My Father was convinced that Marvin was a threat to the family legacy. He said Marvin was changing everything, risking everything we built. I believed him, and I tried to eliminate the so-called threat. I met the Contractor. That’s the only name I know him. He would own 30% of the company if we had succeeded."
My expression remained impassive, masking the internal turmoil. The revelation of family betrayal and manipulation cut deep, intertwining with her own complicated history. I had thought that all the atrocities were carried out by Uncle Jonah, but to think of the son, Lucas, as the perpetrator was not shocking but stupid.
Larry pressed on, "And the Contractor? Do you know who he is?”
Lucas glanced around, gauging the reactions of those present. "The Contractor. No, I don’t. I was introduced to him by my father. He said he and his brother, Marvin Senior, used him for jobs. Now he thinks I betrayed him by not getting the documents and giving him a share of the company, as we agreed if he killed Marvin. He wants me to pay for not getting the documents, getting the company, or killing Marvin. He won't stop until I'm dead."
My mind looked like a battleground of conflicting emotions. I decided to intervene. "We need to focus on the immediate threat. Larry, Ken is connected to all this. We need to find out if he was working for Lucas, Uncle Jonah, or the Contractor."
Larry nodded in agreement, his gaze shifting between Lucas and Cassie. "Ken has betrayed Marvin before, so we will need to understand the extent of his involvement. If he's tied to the Contractor, we might have a way to unravel this mess."
Turning to Lucas, he was hoping I would not turn him back. For someone who has hurt me and the ones I loved, I should. I should allow him to suffer for all the pain I had to go through.
“For coming to us, if Sancho agrees, we will place a guard over you. But you must call us if you sense anything or come in contact with the Contractor,” I said.
Sancho nodded his head, “Go ahead, Cassie, place a guard over him. Larry, you may also want to have your eyes on him,” Sancho said.
The room shifted its attention to Lucas, who pleaded for protection. "Cassie, you have to help me. The Contractor won't stop until he finds me, and I don't want to die."
My gaze bore into Lucas's eyes, assessing the sincerity of his plea. "We'll protect you, Lucas. But you have to cooperate. No more secrets, no more lies. We need to unravel this conspiracy, and you're a key piece of the puzzle."
