“Larry, I killed Ken, but that is not what is bothering me. We were attacked by some unknown gunmen, and I have never seen them before, though I killed all of them” I said.
“Please Cassie, help me understand, you said you were attacked by unknown gunmen. Were they protecting Ken or were they sent after you? Did you get a closer look? Did you identify anyone?” Larry asked.
“That is what I want you to look into for me. It was at the location you sent me. I didn't identify anyone and could not get a closer look, so help me find out who these men are, please,” I replied to Larry, who was at this time packing up bags.
“Please, where are you going? We have a lot of things to discuss, and you think this is the best time to start packing up your bags,” I said.
“Cassie, we are not discussing anything, I am taking you to Doctor Jake. You need a check-up, and you should start visiting the hospital regularly because of the child in you. I can forgive you for the way you treat yourself, but I will not for the way you treat the child inside of you,” Larry said.
I did not put up any fight about going to the hospital. I had forgotten that I was even pregnant and if not for Larry I would have continued with my mistakes which may have affected my health. The reason I love Larry. He never forgot a thing and kept reminding me I was pregnant.
The sterile scent of antiseptic lingered in the air as I sat in the small examination room at the hospital. The tension in my chest was palpable, a mixture of nerves and anticipation. Doctor Jake, the seasoned physician known for his discretion who has been attending to me because of Marvin, entered the room, his expression a mask of professionalism.
"Cassie, good to see you. What brings you here today?" Doctor Jake inquired, his voice calm and reassuring.
“I thought you knew,” I said.
“People, like you, don’t want to be told what to do, so what brings you here?” Doctor Jake asked.
My gaze was steady, I took a deep breath before responding, "I need to know what's going on. Something doesn't feel right. Though I played over it I could sense it, doctor."
Nodding understandingly, Doctor Jake motioned for me to lie down on the examination bed. As he conducted the ultrasound, a hushed silence settled over the room. My eyes remained fixed on the monitor, where shadows and shapes painted a picture of the unknown.
After a few moments, Doctor Jake broke the silence. "Cassie, you're going to want to hear this. You're not just expecting one baby; you're carrying twins."
My eyes widened in surprise, the gravity of the revelation sinking in. Twins, it was a twist of fate that added a layer of complexity to an already intricate life. I listened intently as Doctor Jake explained the details, his words a distant hum as my thoughts raced.
Why Twins? What has Marvin done to me? A lot of things went through my mind. I have been unkind to my unborn babies. I needed a break but with everything happening so fast, I felt I could carry on.
If the Martinez Gang knew, they would want to suspend me until I give birth and, right now, that is not a very good position for me or my loved ones. It would create exposure and may allow the Contractor to strike easily.
I had to discuss it with Larry. We must put in place a plan before my belly starts blowing up. If not, we would lose our protection and finally allow the contractor so much room and freedom to undermine our safety and operations.
Leaving the hospital, my mind buzzed with a whirlwind of emotions. I clutched the ultrasound images, a tangible connection to the two lives growing within me. As I stepped into the cool evening air, I knew I had to share this news with Marvin, the man whose life had become intricately woven with mine.
“Larry, it’s a twin. I think I need to tell Marvin, and we need to plan. The Martinez Gang won’t want a pregnant lady for a deputy,” I said.
“I agree with you, absolutely. You have endangered yourself and your kids so much, it is time we took care of you,” Larry said.
Later that evening, in the comfort of Marvin's mansion, I found herself standing in front of him, the weight of the revelation pressing against her chest. Marvin, engrossed in some paperwork, looked up, his eyes meeting mine.
"Cassie, what's on your mind?" Marvin asked, sensing the gravity of the moment.
Taking a deep breath, I spoke the words that would reshape our future. "Marvin, we're going to have a baby. No, not just one. We're going to have twins."
Marvin's eyes widened, a mixture of shock and joy flickering across his face. He stood up, the paperwork forgotten, and walked over to me. His hands gently cupped my face as he kissed her forehead.
“I knew you were keeping something from me. But thank you for telling me, thank you so much, my love,” Marvin said.
“Are you okay, Marvin? I mean with the news,” I asked.
"Twins? Cassie, this is incredible!" Marvin exclaimed, his excitement contagious.
As we sat together, I shared the details of the doctor's visit, the ultrasound images becoming a tangible representation of our expanding family. The room, once filled with the weight of secrets and shadows, now held the promise of new beginnings.
In the next two days that followed, I and Marvin navigated the complexities of our dual lives with a newfound purpose. The revelation of impending parenthood brought a sense of unity and a shared commitment to creating a future for our growing family.
Our discussions veered from the intricacies of the Martinez Gang to nursery colors and parenting philosophies. I was once the stoic guardian of shadows, but have now found myself embracing the vulnerability that comes with impending motherhood.
As we planned our next moves, Marvin and I were acutely aware that the world we inhabited was fraught with challenges. The shadows that clung to them seemed to retreat in the face of the life blossoming within me. Parenthood, with all its uncertainties, became a beacon of light in their tumultuous journey.
