I sat in my room at the hotel thinking of how I could navigate the new phase of my life. Things were going to be a lot different as I knew that from next month, my belly would be protruding, and I might not be able to perform certain things at my optimal duty. I did not like the way I felt about it, but it was just the truth I had to face. I had just gotten a drink from the fridge when I heard a knock at the door.
As I opened the door, I was quite shocked to see Uncle Jonah. He stood there waving at me, who seemed like someone who had seen a ghost. He wanted permission to come into the room. Though pregnant, I was still very prepared for anything and all things. I quickly held on to my lap knife.
“No need for that, Cassie. I have come in peace and also to make you know something you never knew,” he said.
“How did you get my location? That is the first answer that should come from your mouth,” I said.
“Like I said, I come in peace and this information I have will benefit you and the father of your child,” he said.
“Now you are beginning to bug me, and you know I won’t take that lightly. Either spit what you have all you can or take your leave,” I said.
“Okay, I can see you still despise me. Any information I have is about Rose and her husband,” Uncle Jonah said. “I know you know Rose, your very good friend who works with you at Marvin's firm,” he continued.
Uncle Jonah's revelation about Rose's husband sent a chill down my spine. The air in the room seemed to thicken as the weight of his words settled in the space between them. I was always poised and composed, but I now found myself grappling with the implications of this shocking revelation.
"Rose's husband is an assassin for the Contractor?" I repeated, her voice betraying a mix of disbelief and concern. How is that even possible? All information we had on him was that he was working for Uncle Jonah. I felt he just wanted to play me as he usually does.
Uncle Jonah nodded gravely. "Yes, Cassie. I've been keeping tabs on him for a while now. He's a skilled operative, and his allegiance to the Contractor makes him a formidable adversary."
“I thought he was working with you. Why are you saying this now?” I asked.
“Why would you think that he was working for me?”I asked Uncle Jonah as he took water from the fridge.
“Every information we had says he was working for you and I have seen him a couple of times with you. So why would you do this now?”
I have lost my son and I will not lose another. This has caused me to lose all the family members I have left. Marvin is the last. I will not lose him.
My mind raced, connecting the dots between Rose's seemingly ordinary life and the dangerous world that had now encroached upon it. "Why didn't Rose tell me? How is she involved in all of this?"
Uncle Jonah sighed, the weight of the truth evident in his weary eyes. "Rose is innocent in all of this. She was unaware of her husband's involvement, and I believe she married him without knowledge of his dark profession. I didn't want to involve her further by revealing the truth."
I paced the room, the revelation forcing her to reassess the boundaries between her personal and professional life. "What do you want me to do now, Uncle Jonah? I can't let Rose be caught in the crossfire."
Uncle Jonah placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "We need to handle this delicately. Confronting Rose's husband directly might put her in danger. We have to find a way to extract him from the Contractor's clutches without implicating Rose."
That also means that our lives are still in danger. The contractor was smart to have removed Rose’s husband from the list of assassins and that was why I could not tell early enough that he was an assassin. This goes to prove why sometimes Marvin's attackers knew a lot about him. Rose must be giving her husband certain information without even knowing he was working for the contractor.
My mind became a whirlwind of conflicting emotions, and I nodded in agreement. "I won't let anything happen to Rose. We need a plan, Uncle Jonah."
Uncle Jonah outlined a strategy to discreetly extract Rose's husband from the grasp of the Contractor while ensuring Rose's safety. As we delved into the details of the operation, my focus sharpened, my instincts honed by years of navigating the treacherous waters of the criminal underworld.
For the first time, I and Uncle Jonah forged an alliance driven by the shared goal of protecting an innocent life entangled in the dangerous web of the Contractor's influence. We were poised to confront the looming threat and safeguard those they held dear.
I decided I was going to tell Marvin to protect his life. He needed to stay away from Rose and keep all the information out of her reach. And we need to formulate a plan that will take out this new target.
I thanked Uncle Jonah for his concerns and for sharing this with me. Just as he opened the door to leave, Larry was at the door with a silencer gun pointed at Uncle Jonah’s chest.
“Do you want to state your mission here, or do you want me to end it the way it ended for Lucas who betrayed you and your nephew?” Larry said in the most menacing way I had ever seen him be.
“It’s okay Larry, we are through, and he did not come to harm me. He came for something else. But first, you must follow him out of the hotel and ensure that he is not being followed by anyone,” I said.
