I woke up to find out that I was still in the hospital. I tried calling out to Marvin or Larry but with each call, there was a certain pain around my chest. The bullet had pierced through my chest and came out of my back. Doctor Jake walked in smiling.
“You do not have to say a word, Cassie, you may still be feeling some pain. The surgery was successful, and we are glad you are out of a coma. You and the babies are safe. Rest a little bit while I get some more medication," said Doctor Jakes.
Relief washed over me as the words echoed through the hospital room. It was a comforting balm to the anxiety that had gripped my heart. The assurance that my unborn babies were safe brought a wave of gratitude, and a flicker of a smile touched my lips.
“Doctor, please I would love to see Marvin and Larry, I cannot wait to let them know everything is fine,” I said, as I found my voice, though painful, still came out quite well.
“Cassie, they know, and they are still here. None of them have gone home since you were brought here. I will get them for you,” Doctor Jake said.
As the news settled in, both Larry and Marvin, my strongest companions, entered the room. Their expressions reflected a mix of concern and determination, a silent agreement that the well-being of the babies took precedence over everything else.
"Cassie, we're glad to see you're awake," Marvin's voice carried a warmth that resonated in the room. "Doctor Jake filled us in, and we're relieved to hear the babies are safe. That was a risky stunt you pulled. You could have gotten Larry with you," said a concerned Marvin.
.
“That’s something that I will never allow to happen again. Her time of doing lonely stuff is over. I thought we lost you there,” said Larry. I could see that he was teary, but they were happy tears. I wondered how he had felt when he carried me all the way to the hospital. It must be traumatizing for him.
I nodded, there was a mixture of gratitude and determination in my eyes. "Thank you, both of you. Now, we need to focus on keeping them safe until they're ready to meet the world." I said.
Larry, ever the pragmatic strategist, chimed in. "We've been discussing how to reduce your activities, Cassie. We need to make sure you're in the best possible condition for the babies. We cannot have you risking too many things to put things in order. You have Marvin and I," Larry said.
I understood the gravity of the situation and the necessity of prioritizing the well-being of the twins. "I'll do whatever it takes to keep them safe, Larry. Marvin, we need to be cautious and vigilant too. We know that the Contractor is still out there and the Martinex Gang is a slippery slope," I said.
Marvin, his gaze fixed on me as he nodded in agreement. "I'm with you every step of the way, Cassie. We'll just have to adjust things, make sure you're not putting yourself or the babies at risk."
We now delved into a discussion about restructuring my responsibilities to give me limited time while ensuring that I could maintain a balance between safeguarding the twins and fulfilling my duties. The intricacies of our plan unfolded a collaborative effort to create a protective cocoon around the growing family.
I was happy that the two most important men in my life were working together to protect the most important thing to me. I don’t want to be absent if not people would take advantage of it and strike.
In the midst of the conversation, there was this unspoken bond between me, Larry, and Marvin that emerged as a powerful force. Our unity was forged through recent trials and shared aspirations, and it has become the foundation upon which we will navigate the challenges ahead.
“I do not want to be absent from so many things. I need a rest and not a break. You both sound as if keeping away will stop the Contractor from killing me or protecting you,” I said.
“It would be better if you stay put and rest. You are doing too much, and you are not only hurting yourself, and the babies, but also the people around you,” Marvin said.
Marvin had a point, but we will need to navigate how we want to deal with our adversaries. I should not be quiet or left out. My name on the streets means a lot. People who knew the contractor had lost his assassins are patronizing the Martinez Gang, but the moment they hear that they are no longer protected with me in charge, it would affect a lot of things. It would affect everything and this includes the casinos. Eventually, it would be bankruptcy for the Martinez Gang.
“You don’t have to do anything, you have me. Let me be your mouthpiece, at least that's how most mafia lords operate, or don’t you trust me?” Larry said.
“I trust you, but I am not a mafia lord,” I said.
“Yet your seat is as the deputy leader of the Martinez Gang. Nothing makes you a mafia lord more than that,” Larry said.
“So how will that work? You will need someone else to work with, Larry,” Marvin said.
“Okay, Larry, I will leave that to you. Please ensure that all our protection details are in place. I still want us to talk to the Martinez Gang, but that will be at a later time.
As the room filled with the outlines of their strategy, I couldn't help but marvel at the unexpected turns life had taken. The journey ahead was uncertain, but the resilience of their connection promised a beacon of hope in the face of adversity.
With the commitment to reduce activities and prioritize the safety of the babies, I, Larry, and Marvin embarked on a new chapter. I was so sure that it was one that would redefine our roles, test our resolve, and ultimately usher in the next generation of my legacy. I love how Marvin is taking this and how excited he is to get involved. It was a good sign for both of us, to work out our differences and capitalize on our strengths.
