CHAPTER 117: THE PAINFUL CONFRONTATION

The journey to the safe house was a silent one, the weight of unspoken truths hanging in the air. I sat in the back seat, my thoughts swirling with the revelation that had unfolded in the aftermath of the death of the Contractor. Larry, driving with a focused determination, occasionally glanced at me through the rearview mirror, sensing the storm of emotions within me.

Larry understood me quite well and, at that moment in time, I did not want to be spoken to. I just wanted to think, I wanted to mourn, and I wanted to plan. Yet, I could not wrap my head that I was sent to kill the people responsible for the death of my family and I ended up getting pregnant for a man from that same family. The family that stole my life and destroyed my family. The family who stole what my parents built. The family responsible for turning me into this beast I have become.

The safe house, nestled away from the prying eyes of the world, stood as a refuge and a place where confessions would be laid bare. As I entered, the atmosphere was charged with tension, the walls seemingly privy to the secrets about to be unveiled. The confessions of my Uncle, the Contractor, had set certain waves in motion. It was the waves of chaos and confusion and Marvin was about to witness my confusion.

I think everyone knew that something had happened that had changed the course of events as everywhere suddenly felt strange. The quietness of the safe house had something to say. The face of Larry could not hide what was in his mind, while the face of Marvin had betrayed him when we entered the safe house. I thought Marvin would be happy to see us and jump at me for killing the one person who wanted to take his life, but that was not the case.

Marvin, engrossed in his thoughts, turned to face me and Larry as we entered the room. His expression, a mix of anticipation and trepidation, mirrored the gravity of the impending conversation. He knew something was wrong, and it looked like he had anticipated what would have happened if we confronted the Contractor. He knew the time for telling lies had passed and this was the time he started telling me the truth to save his life.

As I watched him, my eyes fixed on Marvin, I wasted no time in cutting through the silence. "Why, Marvin?" My voice, though controlled, carried the weight of years of unanswered questions. "Why did you keep quiet? You knew all along. You deceived me with your quietness and got me pregnant for you."

Marvin, the weight of guilt etched on his face, hesitated before responding. "I thought I could protect you. I thought... I thought it was the right thing to do."

My gaze intensified. "Protect me? By keeping the truth from me? By letting me believe that the Contractor was just a faceless enemy? Tell me, Marvin, how you were protecting me. I want to know."

Larry, standing by my side, chimed in. "Marvin, secrets have a way of catching up with you. Cassie deserved to know the truth. She deserves your side of the story. At least you can give her that, can't you?"

Marvin, his shoulders sagging, admitted, "I know. And I'm sorry, Cassie. I should've told you. But I was afraid. Afraid of losing you, of losing everything."

I was caught between anger and hurt and took a moment before responding. "Your fear cost me years of not knowing who I truly am. It cost me my family. My parents. It cost me their company, and it cost me my life."

Silence enveloped the room as the weight of my words settled. Marvin, grappling with the consequences of his choices, searched for words that could bridge the chasm that had opened between us.

"I don't expect you to forgive me, Cassie," Marvin finally said, his voice heavy with remorse. "But I want to make things right. I want to help you find justice for what happened to your parents."

My resolve was unyielding as I met Marvin's gaze. "Justice, Marvin, won't bring back my parents. But it's a start."

“Talking about justice, you tried killing my father, in fact, you killed him because it was your assassination attempt that kept him the way he is today and kept him out of this world,” Marvin said.

The admission hung in the air, a heavy acknowledgment of intertwined destinies and the consequences of actions long buried beneath layers of secrecy. My eyes narrowed, my expression a blend of disbelief and indignation as I processed Marvin's revelation.

"He's in and out of a coma because of me?" my voice cut through the room, the weight of guilt settling on my shoulders. The revelation, like a cruel twist of fate, left her grappling with the unintended repercussions of her past actions. “But he killed my parents.”

Marvin, his gaze fixed on the floor, nodded solemnly. "After you attacked him, he spiraled into this state. The doctors said it was a result of the trauma, both physical and emotional."

My mind was racing as I felt the weight of responsibility pressing down on me. "I didn't know. I didn't know he'd end up like this. I was just doing a job I was paid to do."

Larry, sensing the turmoil in the room, interjected, "Cassie, you did what you thought was right at the time. None of us could've predicted this outcome. He killed your parents, and you had him too."

Marvin, looking up to meet my gaze, added, "I'm not telling you this to make you feel guilty. I just want you to understand the whole truth."

I had conflicted emotions churning within me as I took a moment before responding. "What do we do now?"

Marvin, his shoulders burdened with the weight of family secrets, replied, "We find a way to confront the past and ensure justice is served. We expose the truth, even if it means tearing down everything my father built."
