The atmosphere in the room continued to be tense as the weight of accusations and revelations hung thick in the air. My request for my father's share in the company added another layer of complexity to an already intricate situation. No matter what Marvin thought, I was going to get it because it belonged to my family, so it was only fair he gave it to me as stated in the Documents.
Marvin could not believe it. He wondered how I got the permutation that I deserved some shares in the company or how I came to the conclusion that the steel company was mine. My father refused to sell to his father and that was the reason he was killed. Marvin Senior was a Mafia Lord and should be thankful I had not returned the favor to his son.
"Cassie," Marvin's voice was stern, his eyes reflecting a mix of anger and confusion. "You want your father's share? After all that's happened? How would you define what your father has? But we are already a team, right?"
I met his gaze, unyielding. "I have the original documents, and they state that I have a right to them. It's my family's legacy, regardless of what's transpired between us. A team built on the wrong foundation cannot stand the test of time and trust me, there are many challenges we are going to face. We need the right foundation."
Marvin ran a hand through his hair, a gesture of frustration. "And what about the pregnancy? Are you suggesting we co-parent while dealing with all this chaos? Are you saying you do not want me in the life of our kids?"
Larry, now sensing the rising of another tension, intervened. "Let's take a step back. Emotions are running high, and decisions made in the heat of the moment might not be the best for everyone involved. We have been through a lot. Let's not make hasty decisions and regret it later."
I was now calm and my tone steady, as I responded, "I'm not asking for your involvement in raising our children. I just want what's rightfully mine. I am not discussing the kids, I am discussing what belonged to my parents, and the reason they were killed. I want it back and, Marvin, you have no right to hold on to it."
Marvin, conflicted and still reeling from the revelations, paced the room. "I need time to process all of this. It's a lot to take in, and I can't make decisions in haste. I want you, Cassie, and that should be enough. You are pregnant with my kids. Why don't we take time and think about it? I need time to process this too."
Larry was now the mediator, and he suggested, "Maybe we should all take a break. Cool heads will make better decisions. Cassie, Marvin needs time, and you need it too. I do not like the direction of this conversation."
I was not going to buy that, though firm in my stance, I nodded in agreement. I loved Marvin, but he kept quiet, knowing that his father killed my parents and took their company hurt me so much that I regret having the twins in me. They were the only bond to him that makes me think otherwise.
"Fine. But this doesn't change the fact that I want my father's share, and I'll do what it takes to get it. And please, Marvin, do not try to stop me. I have the documents."
“You will kill me too! I am the father of the twins inside of you,” said Marvin in anger.
“But your father could kill my father, and you knew all along without saying anything to the mother of your kids,” I said.
The room fell into a heavy silence as the trio grappled with the intricacies of their intertwined lives. The future, now more uncertain than ever, awaited their decisions and the consequences that would follow.
“Tell me if you were not hired by the Contractor to kill me. Is that not how you got the documents from me in the first place?”
In the midst of the charged atmosphere, I decided to lay bare the truth that had long been buried beneath layers of secrets and deception. I turned to Marvin, my expression was resolute, and I spoke with a mixture of pain and conviction.
"Marvin, you need to understand something," I began. My words were measured, but they were filled with an underlying intensity. "I was paid to kill you. That was my job, my mission. But I refused, and in that refusal, I unwittingly set off a chain of events that led us to where we are now."
Marvin's eyes widened with a mix of surprise and realization. The weight of my revelation settled heavily in the room, casting a shadow on the tangled web of their shared history. I had told him I was an assassin before now. Maybe he thought I was joking.
"You protected me," Marvin murmured, the gravity of my sacrifice sinking in. Now he knows that he could have been dead a long time ago if I wanted him dead.
"Yes, Marvin. Despite everything, I protected you. I kept you safe because, in the chaos of my world, you became something worth protecting," I confessed, her voice carrying the weight of unspoken emotions. “I love you Marvin, but now I don’t know about that.”
A heavy silence hung in the air, the truth lingering between them like an unspoken agreement. I continued, my gaze unwavering. "It was my love for you that kept you alive. And now, here we are, facing the consequences of choices made and secrets kept."
Marvin, grappling with the revelation, finally spoke. "Cassie, I didn't know. I had no idea about any of this."
I nodded solemnly. "I know you didn't. But now you do. I need you to understand the sacrifices made for you, for us."
Our connection, once obscured by layers of deception, is now laid bare, leaving us vulnerable to the truth that had long been concealed. The room echoed with the weight of our shared history, and the path forward seemed more uncertain than ever.
