Elena’s POV

I didn’t dare linger for long. Once I confirmed no one was coming, I slipped out quickly, moving as silently as possible. My ankle, however, had other plans. A sharp pain shot through it, making me stumble.

Gritting my teeth, I forced myself forward, determined not to show weakness. Reaching the artificial lake, I leaned over to retrieve my phone.

Water rippled around it, and when I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. It was dead and soaked beyond repair.
