Damien was long gone before the pains started.

It began with a dull ache low in my belly, faint at first, then sharper, slicing through me like a knife twisting inside flesh long since healed.

I froze, clutching the edge of the small bed in the private house Damien had locked me into.

The pain tore deeper, I knew it was phantom but merciless. My chest tightened, my breath shuddered, and suddenly I was not here anymore—I was there.
