I still had Damien’s watch tucked inside my bag.

Even as I walked back to my desk, the weight of it felt heavier than it should have, as though it wasn’t just metal and glass but something far more dangerous—something that didn’t belong to me in any sense of the word.

I couldn’t understand why he had done it.

Why he would leave something so personal, so unmistakably his, in my possession.

Or maybe I understood too well, and that was what unsettled me ...
