The ballroom glittered like a jewel box cracked open, spilling diamonds across the floor. Chandeliers blazed overhead, throwing fire into every champagne glass, every silk gown, every tailored suit. Music swelled and dipped, the kind of string quartet piece meant to remind us all how expensive the air was up here.
