Chapter 7

Lily's POV

No response was received as the 3 of us remained silent, and waiting. A few seconds went by and the man leading us knocked for a second time. Moments later he pushed the door open, Daisy and I exchanging a glance hence we still heard nothing.

"He's waiting," we were told, with a gesture inside the room. Daisy was the first to go in after which I forced a polite smile and went in, the door shutting the moment my feet were past the doorframe.

I surpressed the urge to look behind or worse walk back out the way we came hence that weird feeling was still making itself known in my gut. Facing forward instead, I spotted the blonde man and his sparkling green eyes.

Slowly my gaze shifted from where he sat at the far end of the boardroom to the seats around him, spotting only 4 other people whom by their looks were employees who had been dragged out from their fun weekend.

I was low-key expecting to see the same directors as the previous time, therefore I wouldn't be surprised if confusion was written all over my face. Out of the 4 were 2 men and 2 women, each who still appeared put together and at ease unlike how I and Daisy were shitting our pants.

"Good evening," Daisy found her voice before me and I was glad. "Your secretary informed us we were needed for a re-evaluation."

"Oh yes, indeed," the man nodded. "We were asked to call you in to set a few numbers right."

"May we know the numbers we are looking at? A few details probably would be nice," I spoke, making sure to stare directly at him with my best poker face. "We need to know what we are working with and where our analysis and calculations went wrong."

"We'd definitely get into that," the lady to his right answered, her tone mild and posture as straight as a pole.

"Firstly, it will be best if you both take a seat," the green eyed man whom I need to ask or remember his name for my own sanity stated. "We wouldn't like you standing for hours now would we?"

"Thank God," Daisy exhaled beside me. "This heels were starting to hurt."

"Shhhhh, let's go," I whispered, urging her ahead of me as we strolled to the long table and settled a seat away from the two employees on his left.

"Thank you," I said, my eyes briefly drifting to the clock on the wall to note it was approaching 6 pm.

"We would like to know if the issue was from our end or if we were fed the wrong data and numbers in the first instance," Daisy interrogated, placing her hands on the table while I remained my attention on him.

Leaning back in his seat, handsome face forming a small smile, he uttered. "Honestly speaking, it wasn't that big of an issue."

"Okay," I let out, needing him to elaborate.

"It was something we could have handled on our end without your involvement," he carried on, and I couldn't help but lift a brow in question and disbelief.

"Really," I exhaled, my earlier confusion starting to switch to irritation. "So why are we here?"

"A direct order from the boss," he revealed, causing my body to go still and Daisy's eyes to widen. "He expressed some concerns and insisted it be best you both come and sort this out yourselves to avoid further issues."

Before I could speak, the lady who spoke earlier slid a file towards me which I trapped with my palm. Those are Mr Steele's concerns as well as the numbers that need to be cross-examined."

Gulping, hence my throat suddenly felt dry, I turned my attention back to the green eyed man. "Will that be all, Mr—"

"Adams," he finally told his name, or maybe he had done so before and my brain had got that info lost already. "Daniel Adams."

"So that will be all Mr Adams?" I asked the question again.

"Yes," he affirmed. "The boss is waiting."

At his words, I felt like we were being watched. Unconsciously, my vision drifted upwards to the security cameras installed in the room, having an inkling Mr Roman Steele was staring down at us.

>>>>

Despite the feeling of apprehension creeping up my spine and the irritation I felt at the fact my Saturday evening plans were interrupted, Daisy and I got to work with the numbers and details handed to us in that file.

5 minutes later, the 4 employees departed after a brief talk with Mr Adams, leaving me, Daisy, and him. Before I could stop myself, I glanced from the table to him briefly, a silent question in my head that read 'why are you still here?'

He must have interpreted the look because the next thing he grinned and shrugged, folding his arms and relaxing in his seat seconds after. Getting the cryptic answer from his actions, I focused my attention back to the work at hand.

Minutes rolled by and soon it was an hour. The data sheets we had brought with us was scattered on the table as we recalculated, cross-examined, and added what we were given.

Luckily it didn't last longer than that, though I cursed myself for not remembering to bring the Macbook which would have made work easier. Nonetheless Daisy and I had to make do with our phones.

We submitted everything back to Mr Adams who gave it a quick read before silently nodding and stood up. "Will get this to the boss, and let you know of any further developments."

At the mention of 'the boss' my eyes strained to the closest security camera again, making sure to send a glare if he was watching. Daisy noticed and poked me in the side with her finger while muttering a "Thank you Mr Daniel Adams," who was about to walk out of the room.

"What the hell were you doing?" She whisper yelled the moment we were alone.

"Nothing," I muttered, bending to pack up what was left on the table as I felt the heat from her stare.

"Nothing?" She implored, her voice having a hint of fear as well as anger. "Do you want to get us in deep shit?"

"No," I exhaled, and turned to face her. "But I needed him to know I was pissed."

"Stop pointing!" She hissed, grabbing hold of my forefinger as she blocked the direction of the camera I was gesturing to. "We need to get out of here alive."

"Who said we won't?" I raised a brow, trying to be funny even if I knew she was right for freaking out.

"If you continue doing that then our chances will be a total 0/100," she glared.

"Okay fine," I let out a sigh. "Let's leave before I do something else."

We walked out and got right into the elevator. I was still in a bit of a mood which she understood clearly by staying as far from me as possible, even if I knew deep down it was to exempt herself from whatever silly thing I'd end up doing.

The metal box came to a halt some seconds later, but my gaze remained on my flat shoes hence I already knew it had to do with someone else getting in hence we still had a long way to go and I was not ready to offer any fake greetings.

The only thing I noted from my fixed stare was a pair of sneakers and an oddly familiar but strange presence. The man in question didn't speak and neither did we. I expected Daisy to say something thus the elevator suddenly seemed cramped and a certain tension happened to hover around me.

Nonetheless she remained mute, the constant clicking from her phone telling me the reason why. I had finally opened my mouth to speak when the elevator dinged, and I shut it, exhaling a breath I didn't know I was holding.

I lifted my gaze in that moment and watched Daisy try to walk out, eyes on her device when she accidentally stepped on the man's foot. That brought her mind out of the screen and she muttered a quick "sorry."

The man himself didn't even flinch, so I readied an apologetic smile but that dropped from my face when I was a foot out of the doors, his brooding gaze fixed on me and lips curled in a smirk. "Nice to see you Lily."
