It was a bright and beautiful morning in Allensouth. The sun cast a warm, golden light across the city, its rays filtering through the windows of Caitlin’s cozy apartment. She woke up early, as she always did, to start the day with her little Sultan.
The soft sounds of his breathing as he slept peacefully in his small bed made her heart swell with love. She couldn’t believe how much her life had changed in such a short time. From the uncertainty and pain of the past to the bright, promising future she now had with her son, life had given her a new purpose.
Caitlin gently woke Sultan, her precious two-year-old, with a soft kiss on his forehead. He stirred awake, his big eyes blinking sleepily as he reached out for her. “Morning, Mommy,” he mumbled, still half-dazed. Caitlin smiled warmly and helped him out of bed. Together, they made their way to the bathroom.
She bathed him with care, knowing he enjoyed the warm water splashing around him. He giggled as she soaped up his tiny hands and feet, and Caitlin couldn’t help but laugh along. After drying him off and dressing him in a smart little outfit—bright blue jeans and a cute white shirt with cartoon animals—she led him to the kitchen, where she made him a hearty breakfast. Eggs, toast, and fresh fruit. Just the way he liked it.
“Here you go, sweetie,” Caitlin said, placing the plate of food in front of Sultan. His eyes lit up with excitement. He dug in eagerly, stuffing his face with the scrambled eggs and fruit. Caitlin watched him with a proud smile. He was such a good boy. She had poured all of her love into him, and now he was growing into a bright, cheerful little boy who always made her day brighter.
Once breakfast was finished, Caitlin bundled Sultan up and made sure he was ready for his first day at preschool. She had enrolled him in a wonderful kindergarten nearby, a place known for its nurturing environment and highly trained teachers. It was a big step for both of them, but Caitlin knew it would be good for Sultan to interact with other children his age.
“Now, Sultan, you be a good boy for Mommy, okay?” she said, bending down to his level as she adjusted his jacket. Sultan smiled up at her and gave her a slow, serious nod, as if he fully understood the importance of the day. Though he wasn’t yet completely fluent in speech, he was incredibly intelligent for his age. It amazed Caitlin how quickly he had picked up new words and phrases. He had a way of communicating that was so endearing.
“That’s my little one,” Caitlin said, planting a soft kiss on his forehead. “What would you like me to get for you today?”
Sultan grinned, his eyes twinkling with excitement. “Cho...colate!” he exclaimed, his chubby hands reaching out for her as he grinned from ear to ear.
Caitlin laughed and smiled back. “Of course, I’ll get you just that, my dear. But after school, okay?”
The two of them left the apartment and headed out to the preschool. When they arrived, the teachers greeted them with warm smiles. It was clear that they had a soft spot for Sultan. Not only was he charming, but he also had an extraordinary ability to absorb new information. Even at his young age, he was ahead of many of the other children.
“Don’t worry. We’ll take good care of him,” one of the teachers assured Caitlin with a warm smile. “He’s a bright little boy. We’re excited to have him here with us.”
Caitlin gave her son one last hug and kiss before handing him over to the teacher, watching as Sultan waved her goodbye with a big, toothy grin. “Be good, Sultan! Mommy loves you.”
“I love you, too, Mommy!” he called back, his voice full of joy. Caitlin’s heart melted as she watched him run off to join the other children.
With that done, Caitlin left the preschool and made her way to her interview. Grace had worked tirelessly to help her secure this opportunity, and now all Caitlin had to do was attend the interview and, hopefully, be accepted for the position. Grace had cleared all the hurdles for her, leaving Caitlin with just the final step to reach her goal.
At the same time, Kane sat in his luxurious office at the headquarters of the Holton Empire (HEO), going through an overwhelming amount of paperwork. As the CEO of one of the largest and most influential companies in the country, his job was far from easy. Kane had been leading HEO since the age of twenty, a remarkable achievement, but the weight of the position was starting to take its toll on him. His mind was constantly occupied with making sure the company stayed afloat, ensuring that it did not fall into the same financial troubles it had experienced in the past. The pressure was immense.
Kane had spent the last few years rebuilding the company after a devastating financial crisis. The HEO had taken a major hit, but under his leadership, it had clawed its way back to the top. Despite being one of the youngest CEOs in the country, Kane had earned respect both domestically and internationally, not just for his business acumen but also for his striking good looks.
His handsome features, tall, broad frame, and captivating gray eyes had earned him the admiration of many, and he was known as the epitome of the ideal man—wealthy, successful, and handsome. His success had made him one of the richest men in the country, and his net worth was continuing to rise.
Kane sat back in his plush office chair, his muscles aching from the hours of work. He closed his eyes for a moment to relax, trying to find some peace amidst the chaos. It was at that moment that his assistant, Darian, entered the room with a quiet knock.
“Sir, there are new candidates for interviews in the sanitation department,” Darian said, his voice formal and calm.
Kane sighed heavily, clearly exhausted. “I’m feeling worn out. Let the head cleaner take care of it,” he replied after a long pause.
Darian nodded. “Understood, sir. I’ll pass on the message.”
Meanwhile, Caitlin had arrived at the office building where she would be interviewed. It was a massive, fifty-story skyscraper, and there was a constant need for cleaning staff to maintain its pristine condition.
The job she was applying for was in the sanitation department, a position that required rigorous cleaning duties, but the pay was generous. Caitlin had experience in cleaning, so she felt confident that she could handle the responsibilities.
After the interview, Caitlin was shown to the cleaning team, where she met Mrs. Matilda, the head cleaner. Mrs. Matilda was a no-nonsense woman with a kind heart. After a brief conversation, Caitlin was welcomed onto the team. She was excited, grateful, and relieved. With Grace’s support, she now had a stable job that would allow her to support herself and Sultan.
Later that day, Caitlin donned her new uniform—a black dress with white trimmings and a white apron—and began her duties. She was assigned to clean the women’s restrooms on the second and third floors, both of which had many bathrooms to maintain. It was hard work, but Caitlin didn’t mind. She focused on doing the best job she could.
During her break in the canteen, Caitlin was approached by several male employees, all of whom seemed intrigued by her beauty. She politely declined their advances, preferring to keep to herself. Among them was Darian, who hadn’t recognized her at first, but as he observed her more closely, memories began flooding back.
He realized with a shock that this was the same woman—Caitlin—who had been taken by his boss two years ago. The realization sent a chill through him, and he immediately rushed to inform Kane of what he had seen.
Later that afternoon, Caitlin picked up Sultan from preschool. The moment he saw her, his face lit up with joy, and he ran toward her with excitement. Caitlin knelt down and embraced him, lifting him up into her arms.
“My darling! How was school today? You missed Mommy, didn’t you?” she asked, her heart full of love.
Sultan nodded eagerly, his eyes sparkling. “Time to go home, sweetheart. And guess what? I got you some chocolates!” Caitlin said, handing him two packs of chocolate bars. Sultan’s eyes widened in delight as he eagerly tore open one of the packs and began munching happily.
The teacher who had been looking after Sultan earlier smiled warmly at them. “He did so well today! He mastered the alphabet and even wrote numbers from one to a hundred without a single mistake. He’s incredibly smart.”
Caitlin’s heart swelled with pride. “Really? Well, that calls for a celebration, doesn’t it, Sultan?”
“Mummy, I want cake!” he exclaimed, still chewing on a piece of chocolate.
“Sounds like a plan. Let’s go home and have some cake,” Caitlin said, feeling a rush of happiness. They made their way to the taxi stand, where they climbed into a cab.
As the cab driver smiled at them, he couldn’t help but comment on Sultan’s cuteness. “Your son is adorable! His father must be a very handsome man, right?”
Caitlin’s smile faltered, her heart sinking at the mention of Sultan’s father. She quickly masked her discomfort with a forced smile. “I... I’m sure he is,” she replied quietly.
The driver seemed to sense the shift in her mood and quickly apologized. "I'm sorry if I said something wrong. Your son is just so cute. You’re really lucky to have him."
Caitlin forced another smile, though it felt strained. The mention of Sultan’s father always left her feeling uneasy, the memories flooding back with painful clarity. It had been two years since that horrible incident, but it still haunted her.
The cruel man who had taken advantage of her and left her with nothing but heartache and a son. The memories of his malevolent smile, the way he’d used her, and how helpless she had felt in his grasp—they were still too fresh in her mind.
As the taxi drove through the city streets, Caitlin stared out of the window, trying to push the memories away, but they always seemed to find their way back into her mind. She had never told anyone the full truth about what had happened, but every time someone brought up Sultan’s father, it was like ripping open a wound that never quite healed. She couldn’t bear to think about him, but the past had a way of lingering, creeping up at the most unexpected moments.
Sultan, happily unaware of his mother’s inner turmoil, continued to snack on his chocolates, humming contentedly to himself. His innocence and joy were a constant reminder to Caitlin of the good she had in her life now. As long as she had him, she could get through anything. He was her rock, her reason to keep moving forward, no matter how difficult the past was to face.
When they finally arrived at their apartment, Caitlin helped Sultan out of the cab, and they made their way inside. He ran ahead, excited to see if there was any cake left in the fridge. Caitlin followed him, her mind still racing. She needed to find a way to block out the past for good. Every reminder of Sultan’s father made her feel vulnerable, and she couldn’t afford to let that hold her back.
Inside the kitchen, she found a piece of strawberry cake that she had saved earlier. Sultan immediately dug in, his chocolate-smeared face lighting up as he tasted the cake. Caitlin sat at the table, watching him, feeling a mix of emotions. She was grateful for him, grateful for the life they had together, but she couldn’t help but feel the weight of the past pressing on her shoulders.
Later that evening, after Sultan had gone to bed, Caitlin sat alone on the couch, her thoughts drifting. She had a moment to herself, and though she should have felt relieved, the silence only made her feel more unsettled.
Her mind kept returning to Darian’s unexpected recognition of her earlier that day. What did it mean? Why had he seemed so shocked when he saw her? Caitlin shuddered at the thought of her past being exposed, of someone knowing what had really happened between her and Kane.
She closed her eyes and tried to push the thoughts away, focusing instead on the present. Sultan was safe, he was happy, and she had a job now—everything was moving forward. Yet, she knew it wouldn’t be long before her past would collide with her present. The world was small, and the people she thought were far behind her could resurface at any moment. She just hoped that she could protect Sultan from the darkness that had once clouded her life.
Caitlin's resolve was unwavering, though. No matter what happened, she would always put Sultan first. The past could try to reach her, but she would fight to protect the future she was building for them both.
And so, as she sat alone in the quiet apartment, Caitlin made a vow to herself: she would never let her past define her. She would rise above it, no matter how difficult, no matter how many times it tried to pull her back down. Her son, her sweet Sultan, deserved nothing less than the best life she could give him.
And that’s exactly what she would give him, no matter the cost.
