After a long day at the office, Kane found himself on his way home with Darian behind the wheel. Lost in his thoughts, he couldn't shake the image of the young woman he had encountered earlier that day. Her lovely voice and the look of recognition on her face replayed in his mind, bringing back memories he had hoped to escape.
As he grappled with his guilt over his past actions towards her, Kane realized that the first step towards finding peace was to offer an apology. Though uncertain of whether she would forgive him, he knew he had to try. Perhaps by seeking her forgiveness, he could finally lay his past to rest and silence the judgment of his conscience.
At home, Caitlin gently placed Sultan on the sofa to rest before heading to the kitchen to prepare the meal he had requested. Seeing him looking so worn out and hungry, she couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for him.
Knowing that he had to spend the entire day at daycare because of her job, Caitlin was filled with regret. She couldn't stand to see him in such a state of exhaustion. She had vowed to provide him with the kind of life she never had as a child, but lately, she felt like she was falling short of that promise.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she reflected on everything. Despite her best efforts, she found it impossible to escape the memories of her painful past. It seemed to haunt her like a recurring nightmare, no matter how hard she tried to move on.
After preparing a tasty pasta dish in tomato sauce, she gently roused Sultan from his nap and bathed him, though he was still quite drowsy. After drying him off, she dressed him in a charming blue pajama adorned with colorful dinosaur patterns. As she combed his soft baby hair, she couldn't help but notice how much he resembled his father, bearing all of Kane's facial features like a mirror image.
Caught in a wave of emotions, Caitlin felt tears welling up once more, a mix of joy and sorrow. Sultan, perceptive as ever, noticed the glistening tears in his mother's eyes. Tenderly, he reached up and cupped her face with his tiny hands, gazing at her with love and concern.
"Mummy... are you okay?" he asked in his sweetest voice. Caitlin managed a smile and nodded, brushing away her tears.
"Yes, sweetheart... Mummy's going to be okay," she reassured him.
"But... you're crying," he observed, his adorable face creased with worry.
"Mummy just had a tough day at work, honey, that's all," she reassured him with a smile. Sultan beamed back, displaying his newly grown set of little milk teeth. They shared a warm hug before making their way to the dining area for dinner.
Later that night, Kane found himself unable to sleep. Tossing and turning in bed, he was haunted by the image of the girl from his past. Her cries reverberated in his mind, accompanied by the distressing echoes of an unseen child. The experience filled him with a deep sense of horror. Startled from his troubled sleep, he awoke to darkness and let out a sigh before switching on the lights.
Sitting at the edge of his bed, Kane reflected on the recurring nightmares that plagued him all too often. They seemed to follow a similar pattern, with subtle variations each time, yet their unsettling nature remained unchanged.
He was convinced that the girl was the root of his troubles, but the distant sounds of a distressed child's cries puzzled him. The echoes persisted in his mind, making it clear that a good night's sleep was out of reach. Resigned to his insomnia, he opted to remain awake in his study for the remainder of the night.
The following day arrived as Friday, bringing with it a sense of relief for Caitlin as she anticipated the weekend she would spend with Sultan. Her heart was set on surprising him with a visit to a captivating theme park, knowing it would bring him immense joy.
Meanwhile, at work that day, Caitlin delivered a remarkable performance to make up for the challenges she faced previously. Matilda, her supervisor, took note of her exceptional effort and lauded her as the most industrious member of the cleaning staff. This recognition stirred envy among her colleagues, who admired Caitlin's work ethic. Matilda diligently compiled reports on each worker, making sure to highlight Caitlin's exemplary dedication and hard work.
After reviewing the reports, Kane found himself captivated by Caitlin's. A slight smile crept onto his face as he read through Matilda's glowing praise of her work. Gazing at the passport photo of Caitlin accompanying the report, he was struck by her beauty, particularly her bold and alluring eyes. Filled with remorse for his past actions towards her, Kane sighed and rubbed his forehead just as Darian entered the room.
"That young lady... Caitlin Rowel, please bring her to my office at once," Kane instructed.
Darian nodded in acknowledgment and promptly left to fetch Caitlin. Upon receiving the message that the CEO wanted to see her, Caitlin's heart raced with apprehension. She considered making an excuse to avoid the meeting, but the thought of running away crossed her mind fleetingly before she dismissed it. With no viable escape, she reluctantly followed Darian to Kane's office.
Upon her arrival, their eyes locked, causing her heart to quicken as bitter memories flooded her mind. Anger surged within her. He offered her a seat, and then Darian discreetly departed, leaving them alone. His gaze remained fixed on her, admiring her radiant beauty while sensing her underlying rage.
"Miss Caitlin, it's good to see you again. I was surprised to learn that you work here. I had no idea," he remarked, his tone uncertain.
He paused, unsure of how to continue.
"I understand you're still upset about what happened two years ago. I deeply regret my actions and the pain I caused you. I wasn't myself that day. I'm truly sorry," he expressed softly.
Tears welled up in Caitlin's eyes, threatening to spill over. Eventually, she succumbed to her emotions, breaking down in tears. Kane, puzzled by her reaction, felt a wave of sadness wash over him as he witnessed her distress.
"You... you've destroyed my life! Everything is ruined because of you! You have no clue what I've endured because of you! I've suffered so much... endured pain all by myself... and now you think a simple apology will suffice?! I don't care if you're my superior here, your authority ends at this workplace. I won't allow you to manipulate me again! I'm resigning! I quit!"
Kane was taken aback. She was resigning from a job she had just started. Because of him?
"But... I apologized. I'm truly sorry for everything that transpired two years ago... I can increase your salary twofold if you wish... or even triple it!" he offered.
Caitlin glared at him with contempt. After subjecting her to all that turmoil, he believed he could simply make amends with money?!
"I don't want your money! And I will never forgive you for what you did to me!" With those words, she dashed out, slamming the door behind her. Kane was startled, although none of this came as a shock. He understood that she wouldn't forgive him easily. Letting out a sigh, he rubbed his forehead just as Darian entered the room.
"Well, how did it go?" inquired Darian.
"She resigned," Kane replied.
Darian was taken aback.
