Chapter seven

Caitlin was resolute in her decision. She requested a resignation form, much to the surprise of her colleagues with whom she had grown close.

"But... Why are you leaving?! You just started, dear!" Matilda exclaimed in disbelief.

"I meant what I said! I have made up my mind to leave this job, and that's final!" Caitlin declared as she grabbed her purse and departed.

Her coworkers attempted to dissuade her and offer explanations, but she remained steadfast, signing the resignation letter and leaving despite their efforts.

Kane was still pondering the incident when Matilda entered with the letter in hand.

"Miss Caitlin has resigned, Sir," Matilda informed him.

He simply sighed, accepted the letter, and nodded slowly, signaling for her to leave without providing any explanation. She gazed at him briefly before departing.

Caitlin swiftly hailed a taxi and made her way to the preschool to collect Sultan. Inside, she found him engrossed in playing with building blocks and toy soldiers. Upon spotting his mother approaching with a wide smile and open arms, he leaped up joyfully and embraced her.

"Mummy!" he exclaimed.

"Hey, sweetheart! How was your day at school?" Caitlin inquired.

"Mummy! I counted to two hundred today!" he proudly announced, his adorable attempt at pronouncing some words causing the teachers to beam with delight.

"He certainly did! He's such a bright young boy! He'll be moving on to primary school before we know it!" remarked one of the teachers, beaming.

Caitlin lifted Sultan into her arms, beaming with pride.

"I'm so proud of you, Sultan. Now, it's time to head home. Are you ready?" she asked with a wide grin, to which he eagerly nodded in agreement.

They departed, and the young boy was delighted to be heading home early. Seated on Caitlin's lap, he happily sipped on the peach juice she had purchased for him, gazing out the window.

Meanwhile, Caitlin couldn't shake off thoughts of the recent events at the office. Had she made the right choice? How would Grace react to her decision?

The following day, after dropping Sultan off at school, Grace paid a visit. She was taken aback upon learning that Caitlin had resigned from her job.

"Why in the world would you do that, Caitlin?!" Grace exclaimed.

"I had no other option!" Caitlin responded.

"What do you mean by that?!" Grace inquired.

"The man who mistreated me... he's the CEO, Grace! He's my boss at the office! When I found out, it was devastating. I couldn't bear to see his face, as it would bring back those dreadful memories! I'm sorry, but I had to leave," Caitlin explained.

Grace was left speechless.

"Wait... So, the person who mistreated you is the CEO of Holton Empire?!" she whispered in disbelief, her hand instinctively covering her mouth.

Caitlin nodded tearfully, and Grace was stunned. She let out a sigh and draped an arm around Caitlin's shoulders.

"You didn't have to resign because of him, dear. You need that job to support yourself and Sultan," Grace reassured her.

"I can't bear to face him again, and I don't want him to know about Sultan," Caitlin sobbed.

Grace was at a loss. She embraced Caitlin to offer comfort.

"Don't worry about me. I'll find another job soon," Caitlin assured her.

As the weekend approached, Caitlin looked forward to taking Sultan to a theme park for a day of excitement and fun, eager to escape her troubles and cherish the day with him. Sultan would be thrilled and surprised.

After completing their morning routines, they dressed up, and set off for Maris's theme park, leaving behind their troubles for a day of enjoyment.

"Mommy, where are we going?" she asked.

"You'll find out soon, my dear," she replied with a smile.

Upon reaching their destination, Sultan was filled with excitement. Visiting a theme park had always been his dream. His delighted squeals filled the air as he enjoyed a thrilling roller-coaster ride and experienced riding a horse for the first time. The little boy's joy was evident, and onlookers couldn't help but admire Caitlin and her son.

"Wow! That little boy is just precious!" exclaimed one of the women, her face beaming.

"What's his name?" inquired another.

"His name is Sultan," Caitlin answered with a smile.

The women took turns holding him. They couldn't resist pinching his chubby cheeks and planting kisses on them. Sultan was a sociable child who embraced everyone who showed him affection; he was content being in the arms of anyone who held him.

"What a handsome young boy! His father must be quite charming, if I may say so!" remarked the woman.

Caitlin furrowed her brows, gently took Sultan from her arms, and without a word, turned away, leaving the group behind.

"Mummy, I want that fluffy cotton candy!" Sultan exclaimed, clutching his balloons and waving them in the air. He had spotted a cotton candy vendor earlier.

"Of course, darling," she replied with a smile, and they made their way to one of the stands. Unbeknownst to Caitlin, Darian stood by the neighboring stand in his usual disguise of a black suit and dark glasses. Although she did not recognize him, he immediately identified her and discreetly distanced himself, intrigued by the little boy she was carrying and hoping to glean some interesting information.

"Welcome to my cotton candy stand! What flavor would you like, young one?" the middle-aged man running the stand asked warmly, with a smile on his face.

"Mummy! I want the strawberry flavor!" Sultan exclaimed gleefully, his smile lighting up his face.

"Of course, my dear. You're so charming!" the vendor replied, smiling as he deftly spun the candy around a stick. Watching the candy take shape, forming thin strands like brightly colored cobwebs around the stick, was mesmerizing, and Sultan observed with rapt attention.

Once the candy was ready, the vendor handed it to Sultan. Caitlin settled the payment, and they made their way out. Meanwhile, Darian was taken aback. Did that boy just refer to her as his mother? Intrigued, he decided to follow them and learn more.

Two hours later, Kane sat on a bench just outside the serene and peaceful area of the theme park, waiting for Darian to return with their drinks. Soon, he spotted Darian approaching, but to his surprise, he came back empty-handed, without the drinks.

"Darian, where were you?"

"I'm sorry, Master, but you won't believe what I stumbled upon today."

"What did you find this time, Darian?"

"Master, I saw Miss Caitlin with a little boy who bears a striking resemblance to you," he shared, leaving Kane in disbelief.

"What do you mean?!"

"I assure you, sir. And... the boy referred to her as his mother. Could it be possible that... Miss Caitlin... has a child with you?! Could that boy... be your son?!" Darian's words left Kane stunned.

Shaken by Darian's revelation, Kane couldn't fathom the implications. He ventured back into the theme park to locate Caitlin. As the day neared its end and the park emptied, he found her seated on a bench by an ice cream stall, with Sultan beside her, enjoying his ice cream. Despite indulging in a lot of sweets and treats, Sultan's appetite seemed insatiable.

Caitlin would occasionally style his long hair to prevent it from falling over his face. Kane was rendered speechless as he gazed at them. His eyes remained fixed on the young boy. The striking resemblance between them was unmistakable; it was as if a younger version of himself stood before him. Kane felt a wave of sorrow wash over him.

The realization that he had mistreated Caitlin, leading to her becoming pregnant and choosing to raise the child despite his illegitimacy, intensified his anguish. The pain weighed heavily on his heart, causing a deep ache in his chest. For a moment, everything else faded away as he focused solely on Caitlin and the joyful little boy relishing his ice cream.

Suddenly, Caitlin turned and caught sight of him observing them from a short distance. She swiftly rose to her feet, gripping Sultan's hand tightly as he glanced at the man standing before them. Kane returned the little boy's gaze with eyes filled with profound sorrow.

"Why are you here?! What do you want?! Are you following me around now? I've made it clear before – I will never forgive you if you're here to apologize. If you won't leave, then we will."

She spoke sternly as she began to walk away with Sultan, but he reached out and grabbed her wrist, halting her movement. Startled and infuriated, she tried to pull away, but his grip was unyielding.

"Let go of me!" she shouted, and he slowly released her.

"You never mentioned you had a son..." he remarked in a soft, puzzled tone.

"You don't need to know anything about me. You no longer have control over me. Stay away from me and my son, or you'll regret it!"

"Is... he my son... please... tell me," he implored in a deeply sorrowful and shaken voice.

Caitlin, unable to bear it any longer, struck him hard. When Darian moved to admonish her, Kane raised a hand to halt him. Unfazed by the blow, Kane acknowledged that he deserved it, and even more.

"He's not your son and never will be!" she cried as tears streamed down her face. With Sultan in her arms, she left, and Kane watched them go. Her fingernails had left scars on his face, drawing blood.
