Going to Lucy's house did nothing to make me feel better. I'm not sure why I hoped it would. The old woman was in a rush to have us gone and had ended the conversation abruptly when a car pulled up outside and the dogs started barking again.

"Lucy must be back," she'd said. "You should go. I don't want her knowing about this. Mick is nothing to her."
