Ava’s POV

As I ran, my sneakers slapped against the wet sidewalk.

The city lights blurred past me in streaks and my lungs burned.

Nicholas was gone, and every second I stood still felt as if I was letting him slip further away.

My phone was clutched so tight in my right hand.

I had called him twenty-seven times after seeing his wretched car on the news, but it went straight to voicemail.

The last call I made, I screamed his name into the speaker until my throat hurt.
