GLORIA

The clatter of cutlery filled the silence at the dinner table.

Michael ate slowly, eyes on his plate, not on me. Vivian babbled happily beside us, swinging her little legs under, spooning rice into her mouth.

I tried to match her cheer, to focus on the food, on anything except the heavy silence that stretched between my husband and me, but I just couldn't.
