I woke up choking.

Air slammed into my lungs like I had been drowning. My eyes flew open and the world reeled—spinning, twisting—my heart thundering so violently I swore it might burst.

My skin was clammy. My nightgown was stuck to my back, drenched. I clutched the sheets, gasping as the dream snapped back into my memory, flashing in bright, vicious pieces:

Serena’s smile.

Her shadowed eyes.

The cold, gleaming shard.
