The whistle of the kettle as the water boiled pulled me out of my slumber. I dragged myself upright, the blanket sliding to my waist, and squinted toward the window. Pale light seeped through the curtain.

I needed more sleep. I’m pretty sure I barely got four hours after I had to wait up for Nyra to return.
