“I’m not leaving you, Jaxon,” I whisper to him, even though he’s unconscious. “Not now. Not ever.”

Griffin walks over and places a hand on my shoulder. “I know. We’re gonna get through this. Together.”

And for the first time in what feels like forever, I believe him.

It’s two in the morning. I can tell by the way the room’s gone still. No noise outside, not even the hum of passing cars. It feels too quiet, like the whole world’s holding its breath.
