Father leaned back in his chair, studying me with that calm, calculating smile that always made me feel like one of his chess pieces.

“Don’t worry about that,” he said smoothly. “Alpha Caleb needs a bride, so he can’t reject you. And honestly—” his lips curved into that smug, familiar grin, “—who in their right mind would turn down a woman as beautiful as you, Selena?”
