Kaia POV

Father suddenly clapped his hands together, the sharp sound echoing through the study. The gesture made my skin prickle. Something about the way his lips curved—not quite a smile, not quite a sneer—set every instinct I had on edge.

“I love this attitude,” he said, his voice dripping with false admiration. “If not for the curse you’re carrying, I would have said you’re truly my child.”
