The moment Selena disappeared down the corridor, the air around me shifted.

At first, I thought it was just anger—hot, sharp, unbearable. My chest tightened, my breath shortening as if my lungs had suddenly forgotten how to work. I placed a hand over my heart, expecting the sensation to pass.
