I felt Adrian’s frame tighten under my hold, but he didn’t stop his comforting strokes. His voice was soft and controlled, yet a dark undertone was hard to miss when he asked, “Who left you?”

I pressed my face even further into his solid stomach, so much so that I wasn’t quite sure he heard me when I answered his question. “Caroline.”
