I could tell she was surprised at my question. Whether it was because she hadn't expected me to catch on so quickly, or because of the blunt way I had asked her, was anyone’s guess.

I stared at her, waiting for her answer—not that I needed it. Her face reddened as she glanced away in what I assumed was shyness. 

“Oh, I…I couldn’t…presume to know what…Aunt Sophie’s intentions are.”
