Max’s voice broke the silence of the room, casual but probing. “Are you… comfortable with me staying here tonight?” he asked.

I looked up, caught off guard. His gaze was soft, almost hesitant, as if he expected me to say no. A dozen thoughts ran through my mind, but I forced a smile and nodded.

“It’s fine,” I replied smoothly. “The room’s big enough for the two of us anyway.”
