Chapter Six – The Cage Opens

Elena told herself she wouldn’t see him again. That if she avoided the SUV, avoided his men, she could slip out of Blackthorne City before the chains tightened.

But she had underestimated Adrian Blackthorne.

Night had fallen when the knock came at her motel door. Sharp, deliberate. Not frantic enough to be danger, not casual enough to be ignored. Her chest tightened as she approached, pressing her ear against the wood.

“Elena.”

Her blood froze.

His voice was smooth, commanding, too calm for the storm it stirred in her veins.

“I’m not here to hurt you,” he said through the door. “Open it.”

Every instinct screamed no. Yet her fingers curled around the knob before her mind could stop them. Slowly, she turned it.

Adrian stood in the hallway, dressed in black, a faint scar catching the dim light. He looked entirely out of place against the peeling wallpaper and stained carpet, like a wolf that had wandered into a cage of rabbits. His gaze swept over her, sharp and possessive, as though confirming she was still exactly where he’d left her.

“You’re coming with me.”

She shook her head, her hand still clinging to the door. “No.”

Something flickered in his pale eyes—patience, or perhaps restraint. He leaned closer, voice lowering.

“This place is not safe for you. Men far worse than me would notice if I let you wander. You think I’m your danger, Elena? I’m the only reason you’re still breathing.”

Her chest rose and fell too quickly. “And what do you get out of saving me?”

His lips curved into something dark. “You.”

Before she could protest, his hand closed gently—but firmly—around her wrist. Not dragging. Not violent. But there was no refusal in his grip.

“Elena,” he murmured, “you’ve already stepped into my world. Now you’ll see it for what it is.”

She should have screamed. She should have pulled away. But instead, she found herself swallowed into the night, led into the waiting SUV.

The city blurred past the tinted glass until neon lights grew sharper, louder. They stopped before a towering building that pulsed with sound and shadows—the heart of his empire.

The nightclub’s doors opened, releasing a wave of music and heat. Inside, it was another world: bodies moving in rhythm, glass chandeliers dripping gold light, whispers and stares following Adrian as he entered.

Elena felt them too—every eye turning, every glance filled with fear and respect. They parted for him like water for a blade.

He didn’t let go of her hand.

“This,” Adrian said, leaning close enough for his lips to brush her ear, “is my kingdom. Every shadow, every voice, every breath in this room belongs to me.”

His gaze burned into hers. “And soon, so will you.”

Her heart pounded in protest, in fear… and in something she couldn’t name.

And for the first time, Elena realized she hadn’t been pulled into his cage.

She had walked into it herself.
