Hoisting Haven on my hips, I carefully made my way out of the stadium, not wanting to be elbowed or stepped on by the crowd. Finally stepping out of the stadium, I made to place a call for an Uber.
My phone rang, it was Zac.
Well, he was the only person who had my number. The only contact on my list. On Monday, I'd change the number and address on Haven's school management's register.
I'd give them my own number and new address.
I picked. "Hi."
"Where are you guys?"
"About to go home."
"Planning to leave without me?" He was panting a little. It was expected, he'd just finished a ninety minute game with just a fifteen minute break in between.
I shrugged even though he couldn't see. "I thought you'd be busy. You guys might want to go out and celebrate your win."
To be honest, I'd had no plans of waiting for him.
"Wait for me. I'll be on my way out in about ten minutes."
"Alright, we'll be waiting." I replied, willing excitement away.
Why would I be that happy to see him? It didn't even make sense.
I ended the call and found a cool spot to sit and wait. I watched cars drive out and few drive in.
A red Porsche drove in and parked few feet away from me. I didn't take note of the lady coming out, just minded my business, feeding my eyes on other interesting things.
"Dahlia?"
The voice had me sharply turning my head in the direction of the voice.
"D-denise?" My older sister, Denise?
What was she doing here? I didn't know she watched soccer live. I wasn't sure she did, else she wouldn't be coming in after the game had ended.
"Oh my." Her smile came in sharp, as though she was ready to mock me.
But thankfully, Zac had gotten me new pair of jeans and the jersey I was putting on was courtesy of him. Same with my daughter's.
Her gaze shifted to Haven. "Is she..."
"Yes." My response was stiff.
Haven gave her a once-over, before asking me. "Who's she, mommy?"
"I...uh... she's..."
"I'm your aunt. Your mother's older sister. Aunt Denise." Denise's smile grew only sharper.
Haven averted her gaze, settling the back on me. "You have a sister?"
"Ouch! Despite the past, it hurts you couldn't tell your daughter you have a family."
She didn't care. She wasn't talking to me because she cared. She was just looking for something to taunt me with, even if it was using my daughter. And if either one of us kept probing and encouraging, she'd get right to the mockery.
Emotions swamped me, I opened my mouth but ensured my voice was steady before I let words out. "Why are you here?"
It was a two-way question; she could tell me why she was standing here before me, looking for an opening to taunt me or why she was here, at the stadium?
"Well, I'm here to..."
"Hey babe."
I whipped my tone at the voice. William? He stopped short upon seeing me. The look of shock and disbelief on his face was almost worth letting him see me here.
"Dahlia?" He couldn't help the urge to stare at me with slightly parted lips.
"Who's he, mommy?"
"Oh, darling, he's your..."
"Nothing." I cut Denise off sharply, glaring at her. "He's nothing."
"What are you doing here?" He asked, after awkwardly staring at Haven.
"Waiting for someone." Wondering what was going on between them both, I had to ask. "Is he why you're here?"
Denise flashed me a smile, draping a hand across William's shoulder, giving him a peck that had my brow raised. "We're an item."
I wasn't supposed to be shocked...and angry, but I was. This was the height of it. "You're dating him?!"
"Yes. Why?" She realized it bothered me and only clung tighter to William who was having a hard time taking his eyes off Haven.
"You're older than him!" I couldn't believe my ears.
I knew Denise was mean and crazy, but I'd thought there were lines she would draw. Well, apparently, I was wrong.
"By a year." She scoffed.
"You have no shame?" I couldn't help blurt out the words.
"Coming from someone who got pregnant at seventeen and brought disgrace to the family. Well, thanks to your terrible mistake, I'm now managing dad's company. I'm now their princess."
My blood boiled, tears threatened to spill. She was stabbing old wounds, and having fun at my expense.
My mouth opened, then closed. Temporarily unable to form words.
"Cat's got your tongue, Dahlia?" Denise taunted.
"Why don't you get your shameless self out of here, take your boyfriend along. And maybe have him practice more. His performance at the game today was more or less, discreditable."
I didn't hear him walking to me but I was grateful to have him beside me, his arm draped casually on y shoulders. Rather than cringe at the contact, I felt safe. Secured.
Denise's eyes widened their disbelief. "You're dating her?"
William didn't take this insult lightly. "Mind your mouth, Zac. Don't think because of one game you're suddenly the superstar! They used to hail me like that too!.
"Used to? You must be getting rusty and disposable. Zac's tone was mocking.
Fueling William's anger. "How will Zoey feel knowing her precious boyfriend is cheating on her with her enemy?"
"We are..."
"I think you should worry about your relationship, man. Is there no girls your age or even younger you could get? It had to be the older sister of your ex-girlfriend."
That further riled William. "Hey, watch your tongue fat turd."
"That's all you can do, Redford? Call me names, trying to take me back to highschool? That's lame. As lame as your performance on the field today." He stepped forward, his eyes stone cold. "But, well, that's all you can do."
"Don't think because you won today's game that you are important. You are not!"
"Yes, I am, William. That's why the club bought me so expensive. That's why I'm the highest paid, not just in the team but the country right now. Rather than waste time trying to show how pathetic you are, go work harder and be worthy of that captain badge, otherwise, it's better off on someone else's arm. Someone worthy."
Damn! That insult couldn't be any more hurtful.
William was seeing red by this time. "How dare you?!"
Zac gave him a cool stare, then reached out for Haven who was silently witnessing the drama. She readily went into his arms. "Want ice-cream?"
She perked up. "Yes!"
"Let's go have fun." Zac held my hand and led me out of there.
Denise cast hateful glares at me and I wondered if I'd ever done any wrong to her. And William...?
"I'll join you, I need to say something." I said to Zac, freeing my hand from his.
He nodded. "We'll be waiting in the car."
I walked over to them. "William, I regret ever having anything to do with you, and I can say that Haven is the best and only thing I'd gotten out of being in a relationship with you. I'm glad I got pregnant, it showed me your true colors."
"Oh shit up, bitch!" Denise hissed.
I cast a look her way. "I hope you're enjoying it all while it lasts, because knowing you, it won't last. You both deserve each other."
