Chapter 18 – Flames Beneath the Skin

D mLucian’s POV

The night air was colder than usual, but the silence between Nareth and me burned hotter than any flame.

He’d been watching me for hours—eyes sharp, voice quiet. The kind of quiet that meant he’d already figured something out.

“You keep slipping up,” he said, walking toward me. “You talk differently… you move differently.”

His tone wasn’t angry—it was curious, dangerous.

I forced a laugh. “You’re overanalyzing again.”

He didn’t smile. His hand gripped my jaw, thumb tracing the corner of my mouth. “You think I wouldn’t notice when the person I care about isn’t the same anymore?”

My breath hitched. The weight of his words pressed against my ribs. He knew—maybe not fully, but enough to make my heart pound with panic.

“I don’t know who you are anymore, Lucian,” he whispered. “But I can’t seem to stop wanting you.”

His confession cracked something deep in me. Because I wasn’t Lucian. I was the soul that didn’t belong here.

And yet, every time Nareth looked at me, I wished I was.

When he kissed me, I didn’t pull away.

For a moment, the lie didn’t matter. Only the heat, the ache, the truth we couldn’t say aloud.

Seliora’s POV

The gallery was quiet tonight—dim lights, soft music, the smell of fresh paint lingering. Kaelyn had insisted they meet here, away from the noise of the others.

“You’ve been distant,” Kaelyn said, crossing her arms. “Did I do something?”

Seliora turned to the half-finished canvas in front of her. A portrait—two women, intertwined yet blurred at the edges. “I’m trying to figure out who I am without losing you again.”

Kaelyn’s eyes softened. “You won’t lose me.”

Seliora faced her, voice trembling. “Even if this world burns around us?”

Kaelyn stepped closer, closing the gap. “Then we’ll burn together.”

Their lips met—this time deeper, desperate, the kind of kiss that said I choose you despite everything.

But as the lights flickered, Seliora felt something strange—an echo, like another presence brushing her thoughts. For a split second, she saw Lucian’s face flash through her mind.

She pulled away, breath sharp. “Kaelyn… something’s wrong.”

Kaelyn frowned. “What do you mean?”

Seliora stared at her trembling hands. “It’s like… someone else’s soul is calling mine.”
