An Impossible Feast

Eva's POV

My father looked furious at my revelation. His calm façade slipped and revealed – for a minute – the man who had abandoned his flesh and blood in my previous life.

Fury burned hot in his eyes and he snatched my hand, pulling me towards him forcefully. His cold eyes burned into mine but thankfully, I was not the frail and eager to please daughter he used to know.

I met his cold gaze with a chilling one and for a second he flinched.

“What do you mean your wolf is brown!” he thundered, startling Layla and her stepmother. I, on the other hand simply sighed and yanked my hand from his. Rubbing the skin where his finger held me, I stepped away from him.

“Do you want me to show you?” I said and started taking off my clothes but my stepmother rushed forward to stop me.

“Stop!” she cried, grabbing my hand. “What do you think you’re doing?” frustrated with my father, she turned to him. “And you, is that anyway to act? Our daughter just told you what color her wolf is? Shouldn’t you be more supportive of her?”

At her words, my father’s face softened and he rubbed his temples. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I just thought – I’ve been pacing around the foyer all morning waiting for you to come home. I just thought –”

“What? That I will e an Alpha wolf like you and mom?”

In my previous life, after seeing my wolf, he had been the one to suggest that I told everyone I had a brown wolf and now I was doing what he wanted and it was wrong? I smiled bitterly, it seemed this people really couldn’t be satiated.

“Come on, Eva.” Layla chimed. ‘I’m sure father didn’t mean it like that. I’m sure he was just thinking you would take over from him or your mother. But now, seeing as you didn’t take from anyone in the family… I guess he’s just…disappointed.”

Behind her back, no one saw that she made a fist failing woefully to hide her smug smile.

Layla continued, turning to my father, she latched onto his arm. “Since Eva is a brown wolf, does that mean she is an omega?” she tilted her head. “I wonder wo she takes after. It definitely isn’t you.”

My father’s face tightened and his daze darkened but he made no comment. Still, he looked at me with an expression with disappointment, coldness and hurt, but I didn’t mind. In my previous life, although announcing that my wolf was brown instead of white, he never for once stepped in to save me when I was being bullied.

Instead, he had turned a blind eye and sided with Layla and her mother instead.

I almost wanted to laugh but I felt a wave of anger and bitterness wash over me. My father opened his mouth to say something but before the words could form in his throat, I stood to my feet and began walking to my room.

Half way up the stairs, I heard Layla’s voice. “Don’t worry father, I’m still here, right? My wolf is a black wolf. It may not e an Alpha wolf like yours but at least its enough to keep our respect, right?”

I heard the smile in my father’s voice when he said. “Oh darling, such a considerate child that you are…”

Not wanting to hear anymore, I rushed up the stairs, banging my room door shut.

At this time in my previous life, my father had been the one coming up with excuses for me but he inadvertently stopped when he saw that he was hurting Layla. It was then that he made the decision to hide my true wolf from the world while watching me live the lie that finally brought to my tragic end.

That was the first time I had been abandoned. To make up for it, my father had promised to throw a grand party for me even though I was just a brown wolf, promising ever to make me live as an omega even though the lie was that I was one.

However, Layla had snatched that party from me, announcing at the party that I was a brown wolf and omega and she was more superior to me. During that party, she ad begged my father to make me her personal slave seeing as it was the only way to keep my disgrace in our house.

My father had accepted.

That was the second time he abandoned me. then there was a third and a fourth and so many more till I lost count.

This time I wasn’t going to let all of that happen. When the right time came, I will announce my true identity to everyone and there will be nothing he would about it.

Just then, as I was about to drift into sleep, a knock sounded on my door and Layla slipped in. she stopped by my bed, not sparing me a glance.

“These are invitations to my announcement party, Eva. You better hand them out. A lot of things will be happening that day, don’t you think?”

Throwing the invitations on my night stand she stomped out, clearly pleased with herself. Sighing, I sat up in bed, picking one of the invitations from the table.

In my previous life, it had been like this too. Although my father had promised to throw the party in my honor, Layla had decided to hijack it. This time, I will be the one doing that.

Picking up all the invitations she had brought, I went to my window and scattered them outside. The last thing was going to be was the girl everyone walked and trampled upon. I was not going to be her slave.

With that, I laid back in bed and closed my eyes, summoning my wolf to talk to her for the first time since her appearance.

You seem peaceful. Her voice floated up in my mind, feeling the longing and emptiness I felt in my previous life. Now that I had my wolf again, I will make sure with everything in me that I did not lose her again.

“Do you recall anything about our previous life?” I asked, waiting for her answer with bated breath.

After a long stretch of time, se finally said. I gave my life to save yours. Was it worth it?

My mouth dried up at that question. In my previous life, it had not been worth it. Shortly after she died saving me, I had been executed as well and that was it. This time, I was going to do everything within and without my power to make sure her sacrifice was worth it.

“Do you remember anything about our healing abilities?” I asked, steering the topic away from her death.

Yes.

“Good. We’ll need it very soon.”
