CHAPTER 6

The following days after Sarah's banishment were filled with silence and whispers across the whole town. Word began to spread that Sarah had disgraced the family's name. Sarah now had to live with the weight of her decision, no longer surrounded by the luxuries of her familys mansion nor the protection she got from the shield of her familys reputation, she stayed with Jacob in a small apartment he was able to secure through his friend, the apartment was modest, bare walls, and had a window that let the pale light of dawn in. but sarah didnt mind it was very precious to her than the grandest chamber in her fathers mansion, it was the first space that belonged only to her. although she felt that sense of freedom reality still set in because she wasn't used to seeing the sound of coins counted twice before bread was bought or the ache in Jacobs shoulders after a day of labor in his fathers workshop. she occasionally found herself staring at her hands soft and unmarked and wondered how long it would be before she too bore the scars of struggle. Jacob sensed Sarah's quietness, and one day, Jacob randomly asked her You regret it'' he said softly. His voice was not accusing but tired, heavy with unspoken fears. Sarah's head snapped up, no, never. She reached across the table for his hand ''I regret nothing but the pride I wasted living for someone else's pride. With you, Jacob, I am free. He smiled and said Freedom doesn't fill stomachs, Sarah and your father aren't someone who lets go easily it is only a matter of time before he comes for either of us. Before she could respond, they heard a knock on the door. Jacob stiffened for a moment before he saw Joseph standing there with a grave expression. ''The word is spreading Joseph said with a low voice The Whitmores are not keeping quiet; they are spreading rumors that they forced their daughter into this, and people are choosing sides, and I don't like the sound of this. Sarah's chest tightened That is not true'' ''I know it's not. Joseph cut her off gently ''but truth does rarely matter when power speaks. You both need to be ready. This won't end with whispers. Later that night, Jacob's elder brother stormed into the workshop with anger after hearing the words from the Whitmores ''you have doomed us all'' Daniel snapped at Jacob Do you realize the risk you have put our family in? The Whitmores will not stop until we are broken, and her eyes flicked to Sarah ''is the spark that lit the fire. Jacob stood with his fists clenched, Do not blame her. If anyone is to blame, it is me. I chose this. I choose her, then you have chosen ruin for yourself. for all of us.'' Daniel sounded. Silence fell, broken only by the hiss of the lamp. Sarah's heart ached, torn between guilt and love, fear and defiance. She stepped closer to Jacob, her voice steady even though her hands trembled. Then let ruin come, I will rather face ruin than face a lifetime of gilded lies without him. Jacob turned to her, eyes fierce, filled with both pride and fear in that moment, and they both knew that what Joseph said was true. Whispers will soon become action. And when the Whitmores struck, their love would be tested in ways none of them were ready for. they had to stick together stronger than ever in this times so as to overcome every challenge their love faced.
