PRESENT DAY

When Scarlett and I finally emerged from the emergency room it was three in the morning. She had a moderate concussion, three fractured ribs, and a sprained wrist. The doctor said she was lucky that her cheekbone hadn't been fractured as well, or that her eye hadn't sustained more damage. If that bastard had hit her any harder, she would have needed surgery.
