The figure with the staff moved closer, its steps silent but deliberate. Moonlight caught on the silver-tipped end, and I could see the faint hum of energy radiating from it. My silver mark pulsed as if responding, warning me that this was no ordinary opponent.
“Ravian Lareth,” the figure said, voice calm but filled with authority. “I am Kaelen…one of the wardens of the balance. The cabal has returned to claim what was theirs, and they will not stop until you are extinguished.”
I took a step back, adrenaline making my muscles tingle. “You expect me to believe you’re here to help? You sound…too confident to be friendly.”
Kaelen’s lips curved in a faint smile. “Caution is wise. But I am not your enemy. The cabal destroyed your past, Ravian. Their reach is long, and their cruelty…legendary. If you are to survive, you must learn quickly and learn from me.”
I glanced at Lunara. Her eyes were narrowed, her hands glowing faint violets. “Can we trust him?” I asked softly.
“Trust is earned,” she said, “but we have little choice. The cabal’s messenger won’t stop, and the shadows will keep coming. Kaelen can tip the scales in our favor, if he’s telling the truth.”
The forest trembled as the shadows advanced again, hissing and slithering like living smoke.
I swallowed hard, forcing my fear down and letting the pendant’s warmth flow through my veins.
Kaelen raised his staff, and a wave of blue energy pushed back the shadows. Silver and violet light intertwined as Lunara and I followed his lead.
“Keep your focus!” Kaelen commanded. “The pendant will channel your power, but you must decide where it goes. Hesitation will kill you.”
I clenched my fists and extended my hands. The silver light responded, stronger than before. It surged like a river, bending the shadows back, forcing them to scatter.
One lunged at me from the side, and instinctively I lashed out with a whip of energy, the silver snapping like lightning. It dissolved into smoke.
“Good!” Kaelen shouted. “Now push forward! You cannot just react, you must take control of the battlefield!”
I felt my pulse spike. Control. That word, Kaelen’s command, became my mantra. I moved faster, more deliberately, forcing the silver light to form a dome around us. The shadows screamed, shrieking and clawing at the barrier, but they couldn’t break it.
Lunara moved alongside me, her violet energy weaving with mine. “You’re getting stronger,” she said, a faint note of surprise in her voice. “You’re learning fast. But don’t forget, each use of your power drains you more than you think.”
I nodded, sweat running down my brow. The adrenaline was fierce, intoxicating. I wanted to keep going, to push harder, but Lunara’s words grounded me. I had to survive, not just fight.
Then the cabal’s messenger stepped forward from the shadows, its grin wider, more malicious than before. “Clever boy. But you’re still a child playing with fire. Do you think the Alpha of old would have hesitated?”
I glared at it. “I’m no child. And I won’t hesitate.”
The creature lunged, faster than I could track, claws flashing like silver knives. My body reacted before my mind could catch up, silver energy snapping outward, striking it squarely. It screeched and vanished into a cloud of smoke, but Kaelen’s voice cut through my euphoria.
“That was only a fragment! The cabal sends more with every test. You must anticipate, Ravian, not just react!”
I clenched my fists, the pendant warm and insistent. Images of my past life flashed behind my eyes battles, strategy, leadership, loss. Instinct stirred. Alpha instincts. I could feel it rising, commanding me to take the fight, not just survive it.
“Lunara!” I shouted, and she moved at my side instantly. “Focus your energy on the left flank! I’ll handle the rest!”
Her eyes widened, impressed despite herself. We coordinated, two streams of light flowing in tandem, pushing shadows back. I felt a thrill I hadn’t known, exhilaration, fear, and the intoxicating pull of power all at once.
But then, a whisper from the darkness made me pause. Cold, familiar, venomous. You are mine, Ravian. You cannot escape.
My chest tightened. My past life’s memory, betrayal, death, loss flashed before me. I stumbled, energy flickering. Lunara’s hand gripped mine. “Don’t lose focus!” she shouted.
I blinked, forcing control. My mark pulsed, silver and alive, and instinctively, I flung a whip of energy at the whisper. The shadows shrieked, recoiling, and I felt my Alpha instincts solidify. This wasn’t just power, it was me, claiming what was mine.
Kaelen nodded sharply. “Well done. But you’re not finished.”
A sudden surge of shadows erupted from the trees behind us, more numerous than before, faster and smarter. The cabal’s messenger emerged again, eyes gleaming with malice. It raised its hand, and the shadows multiplied, twisting and striking at impossible angles.
I felt my chest tighten, lungs burning, but the pendant’s warmth grounded me. “Lunara!” I yelled. “Now!”
She unleashed a wave of violet energy, pushing some shadows back. I extended my hands fully, channeling the silver light like never before.
The dome we created shimmered, stretching outward, forcing the cabal’s messenger backward. For the first time, I felt not just Alpha, but leader.
But then…a scream split the night. Not mine. Not Lunara’s. A human scream. From the forest beyond.
The cabal’s messenger’s grin widened. “Ah…so the Alpha must choose. Protect his ally, or protect the world.”
My chest tightened. The shadows shifted, the path to the scream blocked by the creatures. My mark flared violently, and the pendant pulsed like a heartbeat. I could feel the energy inside me screaming for action. I had to choose.
Lunara’s violet eyes met mine, wide and fearful. “Ravian…we can’t…”
“I know,” I whispered, the weight of centuries pressing down on me. “But I’m not leaving them.”
The cabal’s messenger laughed, shadows swirling faster, dark as ink against the silver moonlight. “So be it. Your first true choice…Alpha. Let’s see if you survive it.”
I clenched my fists, energy thrumming along my arms, silver light burning brighter than ever. My chest ached with power, with fear, with determination.
And then, I stepped forward and screamed.
