The moment the official uttered those words.. “Take both men to the healer to test their blood” the clearing split in two.

On one side, the murmuring crowd pressed forward, hungry for spectacle unfolding in front of them.

And then, on the other, I saw her…

Amelia, as she stood frozen where she was, her wide eyes fixed on me.

But I had no time to look back at her.

Two guards flanked me, their hands firm on my arms, as if I might bolt.
