Rory's newfound peace was shattered by a knock on the door. A frowned faced debt collector stood in front of her door, demanding payment for her aunt's outstanding debts which are yet to be paid. And it was obvious that it was the same man her aunt called Mateo. “You possibly think you can hide forever from me?” Mateo asked.
“What are you doing here? Who gave you the address?”” Rory asked, her voice shivered.
“Well, I think that is not the right question for you to ask me right now. I think the right question should be two: may I help you, but I think you already know what I am here for so with no too much complaint, can I have them already?” Mateo said.
“I have nothing to give you, so just leave here so you wouldn't cause any problems for you” Rory said, her voice loud and harsh.
“Why are you acting like I'm the bad person here? All I need from you is my money and nothing more than that. I came in peace to take it. I hope you won't let me force you to,” Mateo said.
“I wasn't the one that took the loan from you, it was my aunt, and she used my name for a collateral, and you allowed it and gave her what she wanted without consulting me first. How selfish could you be” Rory said.
“I asked her about it, and she assured me that you are the one to pay. I had no chance in meeting with you, so I found it unnecessary to discuss it with you since she has already done so,” Mateo said.
“I have absolutely nothing to give you, it's obvious that I came here to improve my financial situation, and you are adding up to the problems, I can't serve masters at a time” Rory said.
“And this is the reason I would probably let go of it for now and I think that the next time I would be coming by it would be for the money I don't care to know whether you are done in getting it or not I would give you from now until next month to get me the money, or I would come for you” Mateo said and left.
“This is unbearable, I can't believe that all this she told me was the truth. How am I possibly going to repay for something I never took from? I think I would have to go back to the company to see if I could get a job there. They would pay me better than this cafe. I have to do what needs to be done before Mateo comes again to attack me” Rory muttered.
Rory's heart sank as she realized her past had caught up with her. She pleaded for more time, but the collector's expression remained unyielding.
As the days passed, more collectors arrived, their threats and warnings escalating.
One morning, as she came to her daily basis, she didn't look as she always used to be, and already Mr. Jenkins had seen her. “Rory, you look full today, what's the matter with you?” He asked.
“Sir, I have something to say to you, I don't know how to express it, but you really have to tell you, please understand me” Rory said.
“What is it that you have to say? You can tell me okay, I would still understand you as my child okay, tell me what is the matter with you?” Mr. Jenkins asked.
“Well some days ago I told you I was here because I was being mistreated by my aunt, but you actually didn't tell you all about the story” she said.
“You can tell me now I am listening to you,” Mr. Jenkins said.
“Well i… She had a loan, and I was used as a collateral, and now the people who she is owning are currently coming bro me, and they are demanding for the payment and if I don't pay, I would be held hostage with them until they are done with me” Rory said, her voice shivering.
“How many of them are we talking about here, and can you calculate the estimated amount of it all?” Mr. Jenkins said.
“Well there are three of them which she used my name to take a loan from and the estimated amount is about fifteen thousand dollars” Rory said.
“What?” He said in surprise. “What was she actually thinking when she was taking all these loans, how could she be this heartless, I really don't understand,” he said?
“I really don't know what I did to her to deserve all this hatred but let alone I really can't afford to be held hostage, so I have to act fast before my limit is up” Rory said.
“Yes, you have to get the money as fast as you can, so what are you actually going to do right now? I mean, what's your plan further?” He asked.
“I have someone who I can talk to, it's a big job offer in Manhattan. I would have to go through an interview and there it would be decided whether I can still work in the company or not,” Rory said.
“Are you sure about this plan?” Mr. Jenkins asked.
“I really have to try this out. I need to pay them off. That's why I came to take the payment for which I have worked for this time I have been here with you. Please sir, like I said, try to understand me. I know that this isn't the right way to be paid, but I have to add up with the one I have and take the next bus to Manhattan” Rory said.
“You have nothing to worry about okay I would go and get you what I have for you okay, I actually understand your point and I know that you are telling the truth” Mr. Jenkins said and left Inside.
Rory felt trapped, her fresh start unraveling. She thought of the mysterious contact, wondering if they held the key to her financial freedom. But could she trust them? The pressure was mounting.
