Harry's POV

I met the investigator in a quiet parking lot outside town because I did not want this conversation anywhere near my house.

He got out of his car slowly, like a man carrying weight that did not belong to him. He did not greet me. He never does when the news is bad.

“She’s alive,” he said.

Those two words knocked the air out of my chest.

“She’s safe,” he added. “For now.”

I stared at him, waiting for the catch, because there is always a catch.
