I had prepared myself for bad news.

That sounds ridiculous now, sitting here with my hands wrapped around a mug that went cold an hour ago, staring at a man who just calmly told me my entire life has been built on a lie. But it is the truth. When you spend years slowly realizing that the woman you married is not who you thought she was, you start bracing for impact. You start expecting the ground to give way beneath you.
