My house is silent when I walk in.

It feels vacated. Haunted. 

And my legs have refused to move from where they froze some minutes back. My eyes have refused to move from the face of the woman who’s lying on the couch, asleep, but not at peace even in deep sleep.

My thoughts are calmer now, yet my decision remains unchanged. 

I want to terminate that sham of a contract, and I want to get to know Evangeline, not out of some duty to the child or to the world, but as the woman ...
