Kael pulled her closer, but Korra barely felt his arms. She stared at the decree as if her life had been rewritten in a single breath.

“Mara,” Kael rasped, “take her above ground. Now.”

Mara nodded, gathering Korra gently. Korra stumbled once, clutching the wall.

“Korra, sweetheart,” Mara said softly, “look at me.”

Korra lifted her eyes. They were hollow and flooded with fear.
