Her fingers dug into the dirt as if the earth could steady her, but the world tilted, spinning around her as if she had stepped off a cliff.

“Why…?” she whispered. “Why would anyone want us dead?”

Her vision blurred again, and she didn’t hear the footsteps until it was too late. Something hard slammed into the side of her head.
