The sound of the rain hitting my window woke me. It had started sometime in the early hours of the morning, soft at first, but now heavy enough to drown out my thoughts. I lay there for a while, staring at the ceiling, my jaw tight. I hadn’t been able to stop replaying what happened yesterday at the boutique, the assistant, my mother’s disapproving look, and the way the words had poured out of my mouth before I could stop them.
