I stepped out of the car and immediately caught Pete's reflection in the tinted window. His face was doing that thing where he was trying very hard not to say something.

"What?" I asked, adjusting the god-awful jacket Cynthia had picked out.

"Nothing, boss." He cleared his throat. "Nothing at all."

Liar. But I let it slide because watching him struggle was more entertaining than whatever excuse he was about to come up with.
