On our way home inside the car, the sky had started to dim, caught somewhere between late afternoon and early evening. The silence between us was thick, heavier than I could handle, but no matter how much I wanted to say something, the words wouldn’t come out.

I kept sneaking glances at Jameson, trying to read his face, searching for any sign that he had noticed me deny him.
