The bonfire crackled, casting dancing shadows on the faces around me. Laughter and chatter filled the air as the pack celebrated. I stood at the edge, clutching a cup, trying to blend in.
"Storm!" Paige called out, weaving through the crowd.
I turned, offering a small smile. "Hey."
She linked her arm with mine. "Come on, let's mingle. It's not every day we have a gathering like this."
I hesitated, but she tugged me forward. We navigated through the crowd, greeting familiar faces.
As we approached a group near the center, my eyes met his. Alpha Chase stood tall, his piercing blue eyes locking onto mine. Time seemed to slow.
"Storm," Paige whispered, nudging me. "He's looking at you."
I swallowed hard. "I noticed."
He began to approach, the crowd parting effortlessly for him.
"Storm, right?" his deep voice resonated.
I nodded, heart pounding. "Yes, Alpha."
He offered a slight smile. "Enjoying the gathering?"
"It's... lively," I managed. He chuckled softly. "Indeed."
An awkward silence settled before he spoke again. "There's something different about you."
I met his gaze. "I've been told that."
He nodded thoughtfully. "We'll talk more soon." With that, he turned and disappeared into the crowd.
Paige grabbed my arm. "What just happened?"
I shook my head, still processing. "I'm not sure."
But deep down, I felt a connection, a spark that I couldn't ignore. The crowd around me blurred, but my mind kept replaying those icy blue eyes, the way they had searched me like I was some secret he needed to unlock. I felt a pull I didn’t understand. A pull I was scared of.
“Storm?” Paige’s voice cut through my thoughts. “You okay?”
I blinked and nodded, forcing a smile. “Yeah. Just... surprised, I guess.”
She studied me, her brows knitting. “That wasn’t just a ‘hello,’ you know. He was looking for something.”
I looked away, biting my lip. “I don’t even know what I am anymore, Paige. The pack... the ceremonies... it’s all so much.”
She squeezed my hand. “You don’t have to figure it all out tonight. But you can’t run from it forever.”
I wanted to argue, to say I wasn’t running. But deep inside, I knew I was.
“Come on,” Paige urged softly, “let’s find Meghan. She’s been waiting.”
We moved through the crowd until Meghan greeted us with a warm smile. “You look different tonight, Storm.”
“Maybe I feel different,” I admitted.Meghan’s eyes were kind but sharp. “You’re changing. That’s natural. You can’t hide from who you are.”
Before I could answer, a hush fell over the clearing. All eyes turned to the fire pit where the elders stood ready to begin the ritual.
I felt my pulse quicken.
Paige leaned in, whispering, “Tonight changes everything. Are you ready?”
I swallowed hard, staring into the flames, and wondered if I ever would be.
