Unwanted Attention

The morning sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. I sat alone on a moss-covered log, the events of the previous night replaying in my mind. Rejecting Alpha Chase's offer had felt like the right decision, but the weight of that choice now pressed heavily on my shoulders.

Footsteps approached, crunching softly on the underbrush. I looked up to see Paige, her expression a mix of concern and curiosity.

"Storm," she said gently, "are you okay?"

I nodded, though my stomach churned with unease. "Just needed some air."

She sat beside me, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "Word's gotten around. People are talking."

I sighed, the knot in my chest tightening. "I figured as much."

Paige hesitated before speaking again. "Some are... not happy. Especially those who had their eyes on Chase."

I turned to her, eyebrows raised. "Why would they care about my decision?"

She shrugged. "Jealousy, maybe. Or the fact that you did something none of them would dare."

I looked away, the weight of the pack's scrutiny settling over me. "I didn't mean to cause trouble."

Paige placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You did what felt right. That's all anyone can do." We sat in silence for a moment, the sounds of the forest filling the void.

Suddenly, a rustle in the bushes drew our attention. Meghan emerged, her expression tense.

"Storm, you need to come. Now."

I stood, heart pounding. "What's wrong?"

She glanced between us. "There's a meeting. The elders want to speak with you."

My stomach dropped. "About last night?"

Meghan nodded. "It's best you hear it from them."

I exchanged a glance with Paige, who gave me an encouraging nod. Together, we made our way back to the village, the weight of the pack's eyes upon me.

As we entered the clearing, the murmurs ceased. The elders stood in a semicircle, their expressions unreadable.

"Storm," Elder Miriam began, "we've heard of your decision regarding Alpha Chase."

I nodded, keeping my voice steady. "Yes, Elder."

She studied me for a moment before speaking again. "It's uncommon, but not forbidden. However, understand that your actions have consequences."

I met her gaze. "I understand."

Another elder stepped forward. "The pack is unsettled. Your choice has stirred emotions."

I took a deep breath. "I didn't intend to cause discord. I only followed my heart." Elder Miriam nodded slowly. "Then stand firm in your decision. The path ahead may be challenging, but clarity of purpose will guide you."

With that, the elders turned and departed, leaving me standing in the center of the clearing, the weight of their words pressing down on me.

As I walked back to my cabin, whispers followed me, but I held my head high. I had made my choice, and I would face whatever came next with resolve. And with that, he vanished into the night again, leaving me alone with my racing thoughts and a future I wasn’t ready to face.
