The forest was quiet as I stepped into the clearing, the scent of herbs guiding me to a patch of wild mint. I knelt to gather the leaves, the morning sun casting dappled light through the canopy.
A sudden rustle in the underbrush made me freeze. I stood slowly, scanning the trees.
"Who's there?" I called, my voice steady.
Silence. Then, a low growl.
Three rogue wolves emerged, their eyes gleaming with malice. They circled me, snarling.
"You're trespassing," I said, backing away.
One lunged. I dodged, slashing with my dagger. The blade met flesh, and the wolf yelped, retreating.
Another attacked from behind, claws grazing my arm. Pain shot through me, but I turned, striking back.
Blood dripped from my wounds as I faced the third wolf. My vision blurred, strength waning.
A howl pierced the air.
Chase burst into the clearing, his presence commanding. He engaged the rogues, his movements swift and lethal.
Within moments, the attackers fled, leaving us alone.
He rushed to my side, concern etched on his face.
"Storm, you're hurt."
I managed a weak smile. "I've had worse."
He supported me gently. "Let's get you home."
**Chapter 10: Healing and Confessions*
The scent of pine and damp earth filled the air as I lay on the infirmary cot, my arm wrapped in fresh bandages. The pain had dulled to a throbbing ache, but it was the silence that weighed heavier.
Chase sat nearby, his gaze fixed on the window.
"You're quiet," I said, breaking the stillness.
He turned to me, a faint smile on his lips. "Just thinking."
"About?"
He hesitated. "You. The attack. How close I came to losing you."
I looked away, the memory still fresh. "I didn't expect them. They were fast."
"Too fast," he murmured. "It's like they knew you'd be there."
I met his eyes. "You think it was planned?"
He nodded slowly. "Possibly. But let's not dwell on that now."
A pause settled between us.
"Storm," he began, "there's something I need to tell you."
I raised an eyebrow. "Go on."
He took a deep breath. "I've been trying to ignore it, but I can't. I care about you. More than I should."
My heart skipped a beat. "Chase..."
He held up a hand. "I know it's complicated. With everything going on, now might not be the best time. But I needed you to know."
I looked down at my hands. "I've been through a lot. Trust doesn't come easy."
"I understand," he said gently. "I'm not asking for anything. Just... letting you in."
