The Pier

The docks were quieter at night than Evelyn expected.

No gulls, no cranes, no workers. Just the rhythmic lap of water against the pylons and the faraway hum of the city lights.

She parked two blocks from Pier 9, leaving the car unlocked in case she had to run. The flash drive was tucked in the lining of her jacket, taped flat against her skin. Her heart hadn’t slowed since she’d left her apartment.
