Sound came back to Evelyn in fragments.

The groan of metal.

The crash of water.

And somewhere above her, the muffled echo of shouting — distorted by distance and fear.

She opened her eyes. Darkness. Cold water soaked through her clothes, seeping into her bones. The world tilted and swayed. She blinked until her vision steadied — she was in the service tunnel Hale had mentioned, half submerged in knee-deep harbor water.
