Smokey barks while looking at me. I look at my beloved corgi who's snuggling up to my leg.
"Haha, I'm okay boy. Just needed...a moment."
Yeah, it's not the end of the world. I can fix this and make the most of my time here. I pick myself up and look around my room.
"He really...settled for simple huh?"
A bed, nightstand, and closet. Unlike the rest of the tower, it's a simple black and white. Black carpeted floor and white walls. Still looks like it belongs to some noble but it's bare.
"No problem, I won't be here for too long anyway."
On the nightstand is what I assume is the schedule. I pick up the envelope and read the paper within.
"Monday to Friday is class and free time. Sunday to Saturday is questions and research. School seems to be at the same time I'm used to. Tomorrow is Monday too. Seems simple and convenient enou-"
Hold on. Why can I read this? Now that I think about it, the elves were speaking English. I don't think there was any magic translation cast on me.
So how-
Before I could complete my thought, I hear a door opening.
I whip around expecting Aren at my door but instead, it was no one. Don't tell me I can hear his door opening.
"Aren...is it true?"
I hear a female on the other side. I quickly place my ear to the door, I have to know what's going on.
"Olivia, you need to be more specific."
"You summoned a...human as a soul bond."
"...I did."
"There has to be some mistake. It should've been me and you know it. Are you seriously okay with this?"
"It's not up to me or you."
"Well, I won't accept this. If it was some other elf, I'd be upset but I'd...accept it."
"You really struggled to say that huh?"
"Shut it, I would accept it. But that's not what's important. She's a human for goddess' sake! You can't...cultivate with her."
"...I don't plan to but whether I do is not your business."
For a few very tense minutes, there was nothing but silence. Within that silence, I was left alone with my thoughts.
I didn't know how to really feel. Whether to be happy he rejected this other woman or upset that I might have gotten in between something.
Either way, the silence was eventually broken.
"Alright Aren, be that way."
A slammed door later, it was all over and the tension faded. I removed myself from the door and went over to my bed.
"That's enough consciousness for one day. I need rest. Come here Smokey."
Smokey hops in bed and snuggles in with me. It's a different bed and world but all ceilings are the same. I stare into them until I fall asleep.
"I'm sure tomorrow will be better."
WRONG!
Not only did I have little time to get ready. Not only did Aren disappear on me. No, the worst part was me coming to class late. I've never been late in my whole life! Oh god, the days I'm going to miss at my uni back on earth...
If it wasn't for the guards being super unhelpful and the golden city blinding me, I could've made it. But no, instead I have to come to a strangely normal uni classroom with everyone staring at me.
"Oh, so you must be the human Aren summoned. What joy."
In front of the class was a handsome but dead-eyed elf with a hunched back. He looked like he was dying for some coffee.
"Stand in the back behind Aren. We'll have a chair for you at a later date."
"A-Alright."
"But that demon beast must stay outside."
"He's a dog!"
"Whatever."
"I'm not going anywhere without Smokey."
"Then you can stand outside then. I don't have the energy to kill the thing if it starts going crazy. Goddess knows they don't pay me enough for that kind of nonsense."
"No, I said I was going to learn magic and I plan on keeping my word."
Silence.
And then a burst of laughter from almost the entire class.
"An outsider wants to learn our magic? Ha!"
"This human has a lot of nerve."
"Just because she's Aren's soul bond, she thinks she got some sway here."
"Such arrogance."
Yeah laugh it up haters, you'll be singing a different tune when I-
"Let's just let her in."
Everyone went silent from that outrageous comment. At first, I thought it was Aren but his voice came later.
"Olivia, what are-"
"On one condition!"
I look up to the person who is...maybe helping me. Olivia is beautiful and a typical hot elf. Thin fit body, fierce blue eyes, and long blond hair in a ponytail.
"If she's so set on learning our magic, then she needs to prove herself worthy. With her body."
All the male elves had to take a spit take from that. All I could do was blush. She's not really suggesting me and her...
"Not like that idiots! I propose a duel, me against her. Artifacts only of course."
"Olivia, are you serious?" said the increasingly tired Aren. I almost feel bad for him.
"I'm just putting your human in her place. On her first day, she's late and even talks back to our professor."
I looked at the professor with pleading eyes.
"There's no way this is allowed right? I don't know how to fight!"
"And you plan to learn magic with that attitude?" said Olivia with an overly haughty tone.
"Lady Olivia, this isn't the battle core class you can't-" said the professor before getting cut off.
At that moment, one of the elves started to chant.
"Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!"
At first, it was a few but eventually, it was most of the whole class. The louder the chanting got, the bigger Olivia's smile got.
"Ugh, f*ck it. Do what you want, I'm going to sleep." said the useless professor!
D*mn it, can this world get any worse!?
