A footstool of the family

Astrid's POV

My eyes shot up as I heard her words. That can't be possible?!

“What did you just say?” I asked, walking slowly to where she stood with Logan. She and Logan looked at me disgustingly as if there was a mess on me but I didn't mind their stares, I just proceeded.

“Anastasia…”

“Don't you dare call her by her name, you piece of trash!” Logan yelled at me, and I staggered back in fright. How can he be yelling at me now? Another lady just confirmed that she's pregnant for him right in front of me, but he's just shouting at me?

“Logan, please…tell her to tell me it's not true.” I squinted, watching his gaze, hoping to see him burst into laughter and say it's all a prank, but he just looked coldly at me.

“Get out of my office now!” He ordered, but I shook my head vehemently.

“No…I must get an answer!” I yelled back.

“What exactly do you want? Have you forgotten you're not supposed to be here?” Anastasia asked.

“Tell him you're not pregnant, you snake! Tell him you're lying!”

“I'm not; I'm truly pregnant…” She threw a paper at me, and I looked at its content… She was truly pregnant with Logan's child!

My lips trembled as the tears I'd been trying to hide all this while finally came rushing down. I raised my eyes to look at Logan; he completely ignored my presence as he carried Anastasia into his arms; he spun her around, and they both laughed joyfully.

It's finally been confirmed; I'm not needed anymore, am I? I truly loved Logan; I hoped he was going to change his attitude someday; I always dreamt of us happily married despite the fact I knew he was with Anastasia. I hoped…I hoped…but now, it's all over! I disappointedly looked at Logan once more before leaving the office.

“Argh!” I screamed as I entered the ladies’ room. How could he?!

“Logan, why?” I cried as I remembered everything—everything I've been through, everything I did to make Logan look worthy, everything I did to prove myself to his family…

“No…this can't be happening!” I cried even more as I remembered everything… My head suddenly began banging. I felt my eyes closing as my vision slowly became blurry…

“Logan…” I whispered as I fell to the ground.

“Ma'am! Ma'am!” I heard, and I slowly opened my eyes.

“How are you feeling now?” A man in a white lab coat asked, I guess I'm in a hospital…but who brought me here?

“How are you feeling?” The doctor asked again and I nodded, not knowing what else to say.

“Ok…”

“Who brought me here?” I asked.

“I'm right here…” a soft voice said, and I turned to see the coffee shop guy.

“Excuse us…” he said, and the doctor exited with his nurses. I was left alone with the guy.

“Hmm…I went to deliver coffee at your workplace when I mistakenly entered the ladies’ room, I found you lying there lifeless, and I was so scared,” he said with his brows cocked together. The worry on his face was genuine, but that wasn't my problem now.

“I need to go home, it's getting late.” I stood up wanting to leave, but he grabbed my wrist.

“What is it?” I asked, pulling my wrist away from his grip.

“I just wanted to know what happened to you. Earlier today, you looked tired when you came to our coffee shop, and I ended up finding you lifeless in the ladies’ room; what exactly is wrong with you?” I pushed him away angrily.

“Just stay off my business!” I yelled and walked away. I walked into the doctor on my way out, he stopped and handed me a paper before walking away. I didn't bother to look at the content of the paper he gave me. Instead, I just went out, boarded a taxi, and we began the ride home. The drive was slow and tiring, but I couldn't do anything as the person driving was an old man…

I remembered everything that took place at the office earlier, and I began shedding tears silently. I'm wounded, and each time I remember, the wounds become fresher.

“We're here ma'am.” I paid the taxi and walked to the gate.

As I entered the compound, I realized Logan was already home, his car was parked outside. I rushed into the house hoping to talk to Logan about what happened earlier.

“Oh my goodness! You're so funny!” I heard happy laughter from the living room as I walked closer…what could be the event?

My eyes widened as I saw the living room filled with people, people I'd never met before, people whose faces spoke about the rank they held in society.

“The harlot is finally here!” Logan's mother stood up as I walked in, and that was when I saw Anastasia seated gracefully beside Logan.

“Why are you coming this late?” She asked.

“Sorry mum, I was at the hospital…” Before I could finish, she landed me a slap, and everyone there started laughing.

“Mum…” I called as my hand hovered around my cheek.

“Don't ever call me that, you barren tree! You thought you could end my husband's lineage with your barrenness?” She scoffed.

“Hell no! My son smartly brought in someone who could carry my grandchild, and not only is she fertile, she's the daughter of a billionaire,” she said.

I bit my lips in pain until I felt a warm liquid flow into my tongue. He brought her home after all…

“Logan…” I looked at him one more time, but his gaze was still brutally cold.

“From now henceforth, you're nothing but a commoner in this family…you're no longer needed.”

“Mother, she's still needed though; she can be my maid…” Anastasia smiled sweetly at Logan's mother, the woman nodded her head.

“If my son hadn't married her stupidly, we wouldn't be going through this stress right now,” she said…yeah, she never liked me. She hated me from the onset, and her hatred for me is something that keeps growing as the days roll by…

“Yo…” I was about to say when Logan suddenly spoke up.

“I'm so sorry about that Mother, I've realized my mistakes,” he said.

“So what am I now? A side stool?” I managed to mutter in between tears.

“You've always been that, but you're only realizing it just now…” I sniffed and nodded. What else was I expecting? Logan has never for once acknowledged me; his mother too doesn't acknowledge me, and now someone else is pregnant; I'm fed up!

“Fine…enjoy your night.” I was going to walk upstairs when Anastasia called me back.

“Get me a glass of water. You know I'm pregnant, so I need to be hydrated,” she ordered as if I was a maid she employed. I just scoffed at her joke and made to leave, but something strong immediately hit my head.

“Argh!” I looked back to see it was a glass, someone stoned me with a glass.

“You better go get what she asked for before I kill you!” My mother-in-law screamed, and I ran to the kitchen to get the water.

I felt pain on the spot where the glass hit, but the agony that had swallowed my soul was greater than the pain I felt there…

“Y…y…you're bleeding, ma'am,” a maid said from behind me, and I quickly touched the spot. Indeed, I was bleeding. I sighed, washed my hands, and carried the glass of water.

“I'll manage…” I walked to the gathering and was about to give Anastasia the water when I slipped on a foot, and the water poured directly on Anastasia.

“Oh my God!” Everyone chorused in shock.

“You fucking bitch!”
